Bob

Bob,

He's not made it to Canada yet - in fact Grant and I are starting to think we are solely responsible for this winter's awful weather.  We've had at least 4 trips planned to get him to Grant's and each time we've been hit by major storms - either here or there.  Good news he's at Hawkeye Breeders in Iowa being collected (and doing very well) and is in quarantine for Canadian collection.  We fully expect to have semen for Canada and export to Australia in a few weeks.

As JiT noted in another post - the first calves we have (all out of heifers) are doing great – birth weights have been 65-78 lbs. unassisted, polled, very vigorous at birth and, in my mind at least, the right kind for a calving ease bull – great shape, adequate bone, thickness and some growth.  We're VERY pleased.

If you want to give him a try at Uluru, give grant a call – we’re taking pre-orders now for spring.

Thanks for keeping up with him.

do you have any pics of his dam?

LJ,

Sorry but we don't have any pics of his dam.  She's a "big" 5 frame, about 1350-1400lb., solid red, really "cowy" female that's sure not the prettiest female on the place.  She has a perfect udder and always seems to hold her flesh really well.  She rebreeds quickly (we intentionally moved her from Nov. to Jan.) and is just one of those no problem kind of females.  As a yearling heifer, we did show her a couple of times - more to evoke a reaction from folks and to give a judge or two something to think about.  She never won her class (never "pretty" enough) but every judge talked about what a great looking, practical cow prospect she was -- and they were right.

I have attached two pics of some of Leader's first calves.  The pics were taken right after Christmas and the calves are both about 30 days old.  It was about 24 degrees that day with a chill factor in the teens, but it didn't seem to bother these two very much.  The red bull is pretty neat - great shape, more than adequate bone and a little more style that I might have expected.  But we’re finding that the first Leader calves all have the same skeleton and some eye appeal.

If you’re interested in trying him, let me know.  We’ve got semen collected and stored at Genex so I can get it right to you.  I think if you’re looking for something to breed heifers to or to moderate birth weight in your herd, he’ll do just what you’d want and the calves so far look like they’ll perform more than adequately.

Joe

Keep me posted on his calves. I would be interested in using him on heifers. I use a Red Angus bull Above and Beyond as of now. I am willing to try something new. He has a really cool look. What are his EPD's like(sorry if you posted them and I did not look). I will be in Nashville in march, wish he was closer for me to see. Looks like you got a good one in him.

Jeff,

Will do.  I talked to Dad tonight and he said the red bull calf is doing very well and the heifer calf is more than holding her own.  They won't be the heaviest calves at weaning, but they'll do fine for having 1st calf mothers.  I'll try to get some photos in a couple of weeks when I'm home.

Jeff,

I'll try and get some pics next week - the weather willing.  Dad said tonight that the calves continue to do very well - he's really pleased with the two calves that are out of 1/2 sib matings.

Jeff,

I just got back from Dad's and wanted to update you on the calves out of Leader.  I had intended to get photos but it was wet, muddy and windy so that didn't work.  The calves out of the bull are very consistent - moderate framed, very sound, all polled (so far), very healthy and vigorous.  They are a little behind some of our other fall calves in terms of weight, but they are all out of 2 year olds and weights 5-7 lbs. less at birth so they weight difference is what I would have expected.

From these first calves, he sure looks like he'll be a true calving ease bull that will be great on heifers.  We haven't used him on any mature cows so I really can't give you a sense of what he would do there, but I would think he would do fine.  He was bred to be a calving ease bull to ehlp reduce birth weight and that's exactly what he's done.

If you need more information, let me know.

For those that asked, he's the information we ran on our Leader bull earlier this year.  You can contact me or JiT if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Last chance to order semen for spring delivery.  We've collected a reasonable inventory of very high quality semen, but he soon on his way to Canada and we won't be collecting him again for a while
