Steer with high flank

My steer is high in his flank and I was told to feed him Barley 90 days before his terminal show. Is this true or is a better idea available?  <cowboy>

I've never heard of that before. It mainly has to do with genetics.

I would look into feeding him liquid fat, because that is the only way to deepen his flank, by  getting him really fat, then try and hide it with hair.  Thats what I would do.

What is a good source for "liquid fat"?  Is there a particular brand of feed  or product that has this in it?  Thanks in advance.

i had never heard of feeding them barley either but i did this year and it actually helped depends how high flanked he his the barley will help some

You  might  try  feeding  him corn oil,  mixing  in his  feed

Be careful feeding liquid fat.  It causes problems in the gut.  You can feed a small amount, but there are many other "fat" products out there to use also. 

what i have done to drop the flank down a bit and add some guts (and can only work so much) was either Beat Pulp or Kents Winning Fill ... or a combination of both.

there is a product by Sunglo.. called full tank. i used this year on a steer with a high flank and was very impressed by the results. It won't drop it trememdously but it still makes a detrimental difference in the calf. Great product i would recomend it to anyone. Very palatable and feeds nice.

i had a heifer a couple years back, i fed her straight Alfalfa and then mixed beet pulp (Dry) into her feed. took me 75 days to gut her down, and i am doing the same with a Simmental steer right now. The only thing is watch how much alfalfa you feed, they bloat up really fast. I fed about 1/3 of a feed pan of beet pulp, and then let them nibble beet pulp and alfalfa throughout the day. and try to keep them full at all times. another tip would be to hold your calf off water 36 hrs before show time, then let them drink as much as possible to gut them down. it will take 5 to 10 minutes before the water starts affecting them so let them drink about 15 minutes before you show. The idea behind the barley is to make them fat(flank is one of the places fat is stored) so the extra fat will make him look deeper flanked.

Pump that bad boy once a week and that will help also, it pushes everythang in his gut back and will create more expansion and depth around his flank
