Dori, I think I might have to move in next door and put a couple calves in that show barn...it's pretty sweet.  I would be willing to bring some calves up and work on some for a couple days as well. I can clip pretty quick, so if the calves are halfway broke and quiet, it wouldn't be a big deal to get through 20 calves between Quinton, myself, and whoever else was helping.

MY OH MY (clapping) If we get this put together we coul;d be in for a good time. Dori, you had better be ready, I think if Justin and myself end up spending a  few days in your barn you will need until the following year's sale to recooperate (lol)

HAHA!!  Well, I'm old but I'm pretty mighty!!!  I might recover quicker than you think!  I'm still concerned about wet weather if you do this before late June/early July.  What month are y'all thinking?

Well I was personally thinking about mid to late August maybe, that way you do not eliminate april and may babies. We also wean ours a little earlier than some people. Maybe weekend after labor day? Who knows. If we go much earlier than that I may not have but 1 calf to consign, but would still be on that prep crew.

Based on weather, I'd say mid-August might be a good choice.  September, after Labor Day, can be wet in Michigan.  BTW, I think we can also set up 2 or 3 clipping chutes inside the barn in the aisle.

Just sayin, Mid to Late August will take out quite a few consignors who will be showing at State Fairs...IL, IA, and IN are run right together, and take up most of August.  A week or two after Labor Day would be ideal, gives us State Fair go-ers to finish getting the youngn's in and prettied up.

Dori's sure got a pretty sweet place!  I'm officially jealous!!  If you have a sale in Michigan at her place, I may just have to drive up & check it out.

If weather becomes a concern & if you don't mind north/west Kentucky.  I can probably hook you guys up with a serious facility.  This arena is located about 12 miles from me.  Has a huge parking lot, bleacher seating for 3,000, restrooms, consession stand, banquet rooms, etc, etc, etc,.  Cattleman's association has pannels or could electric fence in the dirt.  For that matter, you could even have a prospect show & a sale in this place & stall all the cattle too.   The location isn't bad, but not great.  It's 45 minutes from Evansville, IN, 20 minutes from Henderson, KY & about 12 miles from Shawneetown, IL.  Probably 2 - 2 1/2 hours from Louisville, KY, 2 - 2 1/2 from Nashville, 3 from St Louis, & about 4 hours from Indy.  It's 90 miles from both Missouri & Tennessee.  Less than 45 miles from I-24, about an hour south of I-64, and 30 minutes from a KY 4 lane PWKY (future I-69).  You can't see the back section, but it has a bunch of horse stalls in it that could probably be used too.  All under roof with electric & water.

And if you let me have a Lowline display and or possibly an event in conjunction with the sale/show, I may even rent the place so you guys could have it for free.   ;)

Here is a picture of the inside...

One other thing to consider is your market. Say its in MI will you be marketing to local 4-H club kids in MI or MI purebred breeders or even purebred breeders from other states? There will also have to be a really unique marketing program to get these buyers there. Also what breeds would be selling, but that probably won't be too big of a problem. You guys would need a sale managing committee to come up with that and some others. I could see this being really fun. I doubt if I'll have anything I want to sell next fall, but if there's any other way I could help count me in.

Is this possibly a private treaty sale? Personally I would think an auction would be better with trying to get so many people to consign from different locations and would make viewing the calves and selling all in one day. TJ where is this place at you mentioned, I boat on the Ohio anywhere from Evansville to Golconda and this would be fairly close for me. Sounds like a good plan in the works and I sure could use a place to move some cattle.

Looks like I am late to the party, but here is my two cents.

Age limit
Quality screen- BUT who's standard's and who has the final say?
Advertise calves in major show journals with pictures. I see lots of pics in the May issue.
you could do a combination of private treaty and bid sale. A board with base bids. Folks see the calves and enter a bid via phone or at the sight.
Heifers and Steers variety of price levels for all types of buyers.
location- if folks that participate haul calves a couple weeks prior to the site, how would Dori  ;) get reimbursed for feed and expenses time etc. Beautiful place Dori.
I would be happy to participate as we are small potato's as well. Couple of calves.

Sturgis, KY... about 10 miles from the Shawneetown bridge on HWY 109/HWY 60.  If you've boated from Evansville to Golconda, your boat has probably been within 6-7 miles of this place.
I don't know where you live, but it sounds like it's not too far away.  Actually, I'm amazed, but a few posters on here live in the southern IL & the southern IN areas.  IDK if Doc would be interested, but I'd guess that he's only about 2 - 2.5 hours away.   And I forgot to mention, it's only about an hour away from I-57 in Marion, IL.

If it was held at a place like Sturgis, I'd think that you'd almost have to have a prospect show in conjuction with the sale to help attract a crowd.  Might need to have some other activities too.  Of course, if the cattle are good enough, people will make the drive or phone in bids.  And I'd say that trucking wouldn't be much of a problem if people from different areas attended.

This would be extra expense, but they have a 5,000 square foot banquet room & optional catering service (pics below).  And if needed a Wedding Chapel.  :p  It also has over 4 acres of paved & lighted blacktop parkinglot, surrounded by chain link fence.  A/C is optional in the arena, but is available.

OB - You make some good points. Having been in sale management and on sifting commitees, I know how tickleish this can be - it's probably harder on the people in charge of quality control than anyone else and I have seen it cause hard feelings (especialy if the sifted animals were hauled a considerable distance and then excluded from the sale). Private treaty or auction - I prefer auction on a personal basis but then again I dabble in the auction/sale managment business. However there are internet auction services available that let buyers from around the country view and bid on animals via their computers or telephones. RW

If this was going to happen and people were going to be hauling animals a long distance then we would need people in different areas to go out and screen animals.  I would hate to bring an animal from Kansas to Kentucky just to have someone say that it wasn't quite good enough to be in the sale.  I think you would have to designate about 10 people from all around the country to be the ones to go out and look at the cattle before they could be entered in the sale.  I would love to do it, but I wouldn't trust myself enough.  I still say that we could pull it off as a group.  Also purebred breeders vs. clubby breeders?  would we have 2 sales or just one?  Just a thought.  I know that there is a good amount of both on this forum and I would hate to discriminate against one or the other.

Maybe an easier and maybe a little less harsh way would be to email pictures to a specified person and then that person email them to a group of say 5 people and then they vote on wether its in or not??  I also think one would need to prepay for the feed otherwise if a calf doesn't go for what that person wished they have already payed for the feed and the person caring for the animals isn't getting stiffed. Just an Idea

Mailing in pictures is probably the best way to handle it.  If the committee thinks some cattle aren't up to snuff, but aren't sure, they could probably find someone in the area to go check them out.

Lots of good ideas.  I think a geographical location is going to be the biggest concern to make something like this to work.  Looking at the member map, it looks like most members reside fairly close to the east and west side up interstate 35 from Texas to Iowa, and than a very large grouping from Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio.

Also going to back to what was posted earlier, it is going to be an auction or private treaty sale that takes place over an extended duration of time?

It could also be telecast on steerplanet with online bids without needing much physical hardware.
