I have a 1 year old show heifer that sits on her haunches like a dog, she has just started this approximately 2 months ago.  The local vet came by to renew health papers and told the Ag teacher that she is sterile because of sitting like this.  He did no testing just observed her sitting like this prior to getting up.  I have not  heard of this.  Does anyone know if this is a sign of being sterile?

It's not something you see everyday, as far as the heifer sitting like this...But as to that making her be sterile or that being a sign she is, I don't think so.  I would get her tested.

If she was a twin at birth she may be a freemartin (sterile).  I have had this happen more than once.  A freemartin doesn't have a full reproductive tract and therefore a simple test by your vet (or even someone who is trained in breeding cattle) can tell if she is in fact sterile.

I would ask them to check her closely especially before throwing a lot of money into her for feed, etc. unless she is a market heifer and will be sold after she is shown.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks 3dfarms.  She is not a twin and this was just crazy sounding to me. I have seen bulls sit this way and could not imagine this being a sign of being sterile.  I will most definitely have her thoroughly checked out by my vet, not this guy.  Just glad to know its not some"common sign" that I was not aware of.  Thanks again for your input.
