New guy here from Md.  Interested in starting a beef herd and breeding some club calves.  I was a dairy guy prior to this and have showed dairy cattle on a national level so gentics and such are not new to me.  However, club calves and beef cattle are.  So I will be asking some questions and doing a lot of reading.

I'll start off with this one.....registering cattle I was showing was always standard.  I see this may not be true with cross bred club calves.  However some do have regisration numbers, what group are they registered with?

Thanks, and if there is some real good reading available please reccomend.

Most club calves are percentage breeds. Which means they don't have enough of that breed to be purebred. For example, to be a shorthorn they need to be at least 50% shorthorn to be purebred. If they are less they become a Shorthorn Plus. To be a Chianina heifer they only need 6% to be a registered Chianina to show. It depends on the breed association. Hope that helps!

Correction. You have to be 15/16 shorthorn to be considered a pure. Anything lower all the way down to a 50% can show as a plus. Anything down to a 25% can be registered as a plus but is not eligible to show
