Great post... I think it is great that they are using roan bulls on there commercial cows.  I also think that is is crucial for shorthorn to survive ( Or began to be somebody) in the commercial industry that we get more shorthorn characterized bulls out there.  It will do us much more good in the long run to have big sets of calves going through feedyards that are blue roan or at least show some characteristics of shorthorn genetics.  I am afraid that if we just continue to sell red bulls to the commercial industry the calves will be hidden or sold as something else and the breed will never get recognized as the reference breed for the group.

A couple of weeks ago I was sitting in a feedyard office in southern Minnesota and was talking to a cattle buyer for Tyson (Don Johnson).  He had just broght back the closeouts for a load of shorthorn sired steers and that was the most profitable load of cattle delivered ever from that feedyard.  Don told me that he believes it is crucial as well to get more white and roan bulls sold into the commercal industry and he could find many feedyards that would love to feed these kinds of cattle (and they will pay for them!) He also emphasized however that is is absolutely necesarry to get into some larger operations because non of these yards want to buy a group of 15 calves.  They like to fill pens...80+ hd would be very benificial.

He is a solid Red Bonanza son out of a Gus 89E Daughter.  Check him out on our website www.shorthornbulls.com  We will be using him on most all of our heifers this year.  He carries a $33.55 $CEZ with breed average being  $4.49.  He is also asterick free for those of you who care.  Unfortunatley we will not be having any calves out of him this year but John Sonderman will have a good chunk of his cows calving to him.  In his first summer running on approximatley 25 Cows in Nebraska he held onto his flesh extremely well. That was when we decided we needed him back.  We used him on 20 falls this winter and he still looks incredible.  We will update his photo this spring after he slicks his winter coat.

I had this shorthorn catalogue sent to me and found it interesting, both the Eionmor Marquis 88G influence and the bulls sired by Clipper King of USA and Ball Dee Royal Commando! (thumbsup) <beer>
Okotoks Thanks for putting the Common Cents Catalog On Steerplanet.  I just wanted to let everyone know that we will be getting videos on-line and they will be able to be viewed on our website(www.shorthornbulls.com) We will also be weighing, ultrasounding, and scrotal measuring all the bulls on the sale in the middle of January and that info will also be available on our website.
