The Big Show / Most Consistent Cow Breeding
« on: March 19, 2015, 07:48:35 PM »
When we see champions plastered on websites and blogs they always mention the bull, and some most definitely stand out more than others in the consistent production top quality club calves. But what I would like to know is what has been the most consistent bloodlines for the cows that these calves have been out of. Often times you only get to see the Dam's genetics if you are looking at the calve in a sale and not at the end when they are holding the purple banner. What are some of the genetics you know have been very consistent for club calve producing cows?

My family has always followed the same aspect as a few have mentioned before. We sell everything we can and then go and purchase our calves from others in the business. Our clients have just as much right to go purchase the animals that we are purchasing so we find that to be the most just option. We also would also purchase calves from friends that are in the business so we like helping them out in the selling of their calves as well. Also a lot of the time we do get beat by our own calves which does make it difficult when you know you could have kept it for yourself but it is hard to expect people to come take a look at what you have to offer if they already know the best is off the table.

The Big Show / Re: Getting calves started on creep feed
« on: March 12, 2015, 10:02:13 PM »
We normally have a difficult start with our calves as well, the sure fix for me over the past few years is to break a small square bale of alfalfa up inside the cage and then put a bit in the tray of the feeder. Sometimes it takes one more bale after they finish the first one but so far I haven't found anything else that will make them go to the feeder like alfalfa will.

The Big Show / Re: MAB Clones
« on: March 12, 2015, 09:55:15 PM »
Only have had one so far and it is only a few weeks old but when I compare it to my embryos that are the same age out of the original as of this age I would have a hard time telling you which was which. I also did a split flush with one straw of original and one of clone for the fall on a cow that is very consistent so I am anxious to see if I can see a large difference in full sib calves.

The Big Show / Re: What to use on First Calf Heifers

We have also been very happy with Jesse, we have used him heavily over the past two years and have only touched a few calves neither of which was very big. The only one we pulled this year was 3 days over due and I think the heifer could have had it easy she just played out with the bad weather we were having at the time. Also some of the best looking cattle I have seen out of a heifer bull.

Thanks for the interest in Slider.  Slider is a very uniquely bred bull with a proven Angus pedigree.  He is a son of Northern Improvement out of a Duff New Edition Dam.  His Grand Dam is an EXAR Lutton daughter giving Slider a second shot of Northern Improvement.  I would think his daughters will make some tremendous females.

Slider is a -.3 birth weight EPD bull with a CED of +10.

We have calved out 6 heifers to Slider and all the calves have been in the 60 lb range.  It is hard to say exactly how many Slider calves will be born this spring but he was very well received as a yearling when semen became available in May.  All of the calving reports that I have heard have been very positive on his ability to sire quality calves that were born easily.  The interest in Slider as a new sire has been tremendous.  Hope this information helps and you can PM me if I can answer any other questions you may have.

Thanks so much for the reply, looking forward to giving him a try.

My vote of those would be Slider. I know the guy who raised him and they have a good program. They also bred the Calgary stampede grand champion steer about 2 years ago. I like the bull a lot and we will very likely be using him on our heifers. Competitive Edge Genetics carries him.

Looked at him and I really like what I see, has anyone seen any calves out of him yet? I know he is young so there most likely isn't many.

The Big Show / Re: Unstoppable and Maternal Perfection
« on: April 23, 2014, 09:52:29 PM »
Commercial Angus cows mainly, few crossbred cows in there but nothing crazy just a shot of maine. We did have some unstoppable calves out of our Alias Donor that I really like. I just wish I could have had a heifer but you can't complain about live calves. If you want to take a look I shot some field pics a last week, they are about a month old.

We didn't have a lot but from what I've seen Maternal Perfection seems to be a little bigger. But this was on a very small sample set.

The Big Show / Re: Which bulls on angus cows?
« on: April 23, 2014, 06:24:24 PM »
We run almost all Angus in our spring herd and have had good luck with Monopoly clones and also walks alone. We didn't have very many this year but I think Unstoppable would also be nice. From what I have seen out of the fall born calves around me MAB might be pretty solid bet also. Then there is always I-80 if you are looking for something a little maternal also.

We have had great luck using him, the thing that I really like is you do not have to sacrifice replacement heifer genetics to get that good bull/steer. Also I have not had any problem with the semen. I flushed an Alias cow to him last spring and had 12 out of 12 grade 1's. I then put 4 of them in and somehow got 4 calves. They are a month old and I have put a few pictures up on our website it you want to take a look.

Depends on what you are wanting to get, are you wanting mainly show steer potential or do you want there to be a chance at keeping some replacement heifers?
