The Big Show / Re: old magazines on ebay

I am very fortunate to have many of these magazines from the 40s and up. An interesting piece I found was a 40 page leather bound book about the bull Browndale Count. I will attach a sampling

Nice looking bulls,  Russ!   If it makes any difference to you,  the pedigree information at Digital Beef for JT President 5B is incomplete.   That is because the registration number for his sire, Kaper 4508 is incorrect (CAM478232)  and that results in no information on his dam.  The correct registration number for Kaper 4508 is 4143276.

Thanks Idalee! They have been very good bulls for us. I dont think I had ever looked at him on digital beef ASA before. He has a complete pedigree on Digital Beef CSA. Being one of very few 4508 progeny born in Canada I could see how something could be missed.

The Big Show / Re: How do you inseminate with old semen: Amps?
« on: July 07, 2020, 10:32:00 AM »
I am right there with you COWBOY.  I took my AI training at Midwest Breeders in Springfield Missouri.  Bred lots of cows with the magic wand.

When it came to ampules, I had one dairyman who most of the time bred his own cows, but about once a month he would call me because he had at least 2 cows in heat and wanted to split an ampule between them.  Had excellent conception.  I remember one time he had 4 cows that we split an ampule on.

I guess al of this tells the age of some of us, but I don't feel that old.

Just goes to show how much the industry has changed!

We have had very good luck splitting amps. Our techs have always used a syringe and a pipette on ampules. If the semen isnt rare we do use the whole amp for a cow though.

Im lucky that one of my tanks has a booklet zip tied to it that has its contents. The 40+ year old tank is a mystery every time a canister gets pulled up. It creates interesting on the fly changes in AI. Haha. Although I do like the booklet because it can be adjusted/updated as soon as something changes.

Wet Willy does the washing. I think he still has a custom cattle washing business.

Exactly-and its probably from the ancient white cattle that ran basically wild centuries ago and whos genetics made Shorthorns very easy keeping foragers for a time -(them days is long gone Bucko)
Sidetracking a bit but what makes you say that? There are lots of operations who run on mainly foraging pasture and then bales in the winter other than replacement females who see extra attention for the purpose of growth and first time breeding.

Id definitely like to be able to upload pictures.  Routinely I try to post something and it says file size is too big every time.   Even just a single photo.   Content wise, hopefully the page will go more in the direction of the type of posts you see over on the cattleforum as opposed to just post after post of shameless plugs and self promotion

If you post from a phone just screen shot your own photo from photo library and it makes the file size small enough to post

What bulls would you suggest? Young Money worked well for us for a while.

I am not really involved in the club calf game, a bull I was going to try a few years back was a young money son Renegade Blues but didnt end up using him. We had great luck years ago with BK Power Plus and Gigalo Joe over purebred Shorthorns. Had and still have some of the original ALI but I think the semen is poor quality I think because we never got a calf. Thought a lot of CCR Cowboy Cut but the birthweights were horrendous.
