Help / Re: Supplements for 4-H show steer
« on: February 15, 2017, 02:34:21 PM »
Purina has some relatively good priced ones. We have used Fitter 35 (promotes lean Muscle, will help keep is front in leaner too) and Depth charge (helps fill out their gut, so they look a little bigger ribbed). I want to try Ultra Full this year, I will let you know what I think if I can get a hold of some. For multipurpose supplement we use Stand Alone, its pricey, but once they are used to it it will keep them on feed and we think it has helped our out. Good Luck!

Help / Re: Help!!! I have no clue what i am doing!!!

We rope ours tie them to a sturdy fence then put the halter on carefully (they will probably jump). Then we leave them tied to the fence for a couple hours. Approach them a couple times and try to pet or brush them periodically (be careful, they may jump or kick). After a few hours try to lead them to water, They will be butts the first couple times, but keep at it. I have also heard of just letting them drag the halter.

Help / Shearing Heifers for hair growth
« on: February 08, 2017, 02:52:51 PM »
My family will have 4 head of Lim-Flex (Limousin X Angus) heifers to show this summer at jr. Nationals that first week of July. I have heard of some people shearing their cattle to grow hair in the spring and was wondering if it was worth my time for our calves. If so when would you suggest I shear them and what parts of the body (i've read to leave tail head, belly, and neck, is that right?). Thanks up front for the help! (thumbsup)

Help / Show Feeds
« on: December 19, 2016, 01:09:11 PM »
I have been showing a long time, but have never been able to get the ration I really like. Most of the time I have used a mix from Wildcat Feeds, but I think it gets too hot in the summer months. I used Purina Fitters Edge last year and liked it, but we had trouble getting it in sometimes. I am showing a May Lim-Flex heifer, the big show I am working for is the NALJA national show 1-7 of July. I will also have a September Lim-flex once we wean. Does anyone have a good suggestion for brands of feed, rations, and/ or supplements? Thanks!

Help / Keeping heifers clean in Winter
« on: December 19, 2016, 01:03:03 PM »
I have been showing for years, but have only in the last few years attended winter shows. I usually rinse my calves at least once a day and wash once a week, but during the winter I would hate to get one sick, but I still want them to keep a healthy coat. I do not have great facilities at all. I have a wash rack, but I have to fun water from quite a ways away, so my pressure sucks, plus my barn is not insulated and has poor circulation in the summer. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep my show heifer clean in the winter? Thanks!
