The Big Show / Re: MSU Winter Beef Checklist/Supply List?
« on: November 13, 2013, 06:36:17 PM »
Not a dumb question and I apologize if some of the things I will mention are obvious:

- Feed for the at least an extra day as we have been stuck there before because of the weather
- Bedding for inside the barn - unless you purchased some with the sign up
- Gates and a fan if you have them
- Bedding for tie-outs (straw) if you plan to tie out (I would recommend it)
- Feed pans and water buckets
- Grooming supplies and equipment including extension cords
- Warm clothes
- Patience - it is a good but busy show especially the steer show

I hope this helps

The Big Show / Re: U Fit class questions
« on: October 14, 2013, 06:37:26 PM »
We ball tails... not like the HUGE ones back in the day, but more of a "tear drop" shape.  Also, the entries vary from year to year... but no matter who many entries it is VERY competitive.  The prizes are really good... and kids are getting better and better each year.  Honestly after years watching the class... I don't have a secret... wish I did because I'd really like my kiddos to win the show-box :-)

OK, just read your profile and I see you are from Michigan.  So I'll answer your question...we have years of experience at this event.

UFit is at 2 PM. You have 30 minutes to fit your calf. Usually you have your calf clipped to the point you only need to glue up legs, tail head, ball the tail, final bloom body etc... Everything but paint and "power".  I have seen scissors used.  30 minutes is A LONG TIME.... especially without "power".  at 30 minutes you must have your calf show ready behind your chute :-) Once time is called you take your "fit" calf into the opposite ring for a showmanship class.  This class is ONLY the calves that have done u-fit.  At the end of the class the winners are announced.  Then u have time to break done your calf for the "regular" showmanship class at 5pm.  It is NO FIT so yes NO ADHEVISVES. :-)

Also be sure to listen for the meeting before the event.... in years past they have shortened the time to 20 minutes :-)
Does that help???

The Big Show / Help.... Fair is next week and Steer is lame this AM
« on: August 06, 2013, 08:00:33 AM »
Morning, My daugther's steer is lame this am.  This steer is a multi-time-champ at jackpot shows this summer.  Fair starts Sunday..... We went to bring him in the barn this morning and he is very lame on his front left leg.  We checked his hoof for foreign objects and check for any areas that are warm on his leg and shoulder.  We soaked his leg with cold water for 15 minutes.  The only thing we noticed was an area that was slightly swollen (not warm at all) just above his hoof ... He will only put weight on his leg if he has to walk.   My big concern is if it is his shoulder.

Besides "drugs" what else can we do?  We will water/ice it again this around noon and he'll have his normal all-day stall time with the fans.  Does anyone have any ideas for special wraps? ways to check his shoulder?

Thank you in advance!

Anyone use this product?  Will it help a heifer that slopes slightly from hooks to pins?

What is the target weight to be competetive with show pigs?

We will be showing at a county fair in Michigan and want to be at the best weight to compete.

Thanks

The Big Show / Adding Depth to heifer
« on: December 12, 2011, 04:47:57 PM »
Have a April Shorthorn Heifer... we need ideas on how to add depth and more fuller flank area.
We feed Depth Charge, Champion Drive, and a complete show mix (very similar to fitters edge)
