The Big Show / Re: Calf not nursing back quarters
« on: March 23, 2017, 09:36:28 PM »
A big thing this time of year is to make sure those quarters stay clean and milk them just enough to make sure they are opened up and no plug in them.  That way if the calf does try them they will find they work fine.  But if the quarters are full of mud they will probably shy away.

The Big Show / Re: Creep Feed
« on: January 31, 2017, 05:20:34 PM »
Soybean hulls are 100% of our creep feed.  Our hulls are pelletized.  We are not as serious as some about showing.
We use soybean hull pellets a lot in our show ration as the heifers mature! We love them! Also use them starting weaned calves on feed.  I had thought about using them as a creep feed with maybe a portion pellet mixed in.  Did you feed yours straight Dale! did you have any problems with pellet break down?

Has he had an implant? A Revlar IS or S will help his gain and muscle.

The Big Show / Re: TAI Protocols
« on: May 19, 2016, 04:41:21 PM »
We too have had good luck with the 5 day protocol.
Lately it seems we have been going with 7 day just because we get in the rhythm of pulling CIDRS every Monday night and putting new in whatever is ready the same night.  Just works out good with the kids schedules to help.  Breeding on thursdays then.
But 5 day has worked great too!

I would go with the 7 day CIDR protocol.  It's more of a sure shot where your cows are in different stages.
We usually don't start even trying to synch cows until 50 days post.  And figure a little longer for first calf heifers.
Just confirm your schedule with your AI tech before you start.

The Big Show / Re: Show feed question
« on: May 15, 2016, 09:52:39 AM »
If the calves are only 6-8 weeks old and the cows are milking good they are probably just not feeling the need for creep feed.  Especially if they are out on fresh grass.  They'll start when they fell the need.

We've had good luck with daily liberal applications of generic athletes foot spray.  Scrape the area first if its really crusty.

We have switched to using the Enforce 3 a few days after birth and then again pre weaning followed up by a MLV AFTER they have been weaned a couple weeks. We also give a 7-way Blackleg in spring and again with the Enforce pre weaning  We have had to treat a lot less this way and it seems to eliminate that post vac stress period in the calves.  Enforce 3 is an awesome product!

B & H Camera can be pretty helpful if you give them a call and explain what you are trying to do.

I would suggedst getting a system that is internet capable.  After you have it and can check progress from anywhere you will love it!

Haven't most of the names listed above been already used in the past? Like way back, before some of you were born.  ::)

Yes, they're all recycled and appear to be unrelated to the original bulls. When I think "Pistol Pete", it's a black and white picture! <beer>

The kids on Twitter and Instagram won't have a clue though.
Yep! Almost Holstein marked.  Mid 1990's maybe??
