The Big Show / Re: What should I breed my Shorthorn cow too?
« on: December 15, 2015, 07:35:37 PM »
What's the reg# on the roan bull and where can we get semen on him? Do you think that bull could compliment these heifers?

Thanks, DHS

The Accuration Range Supplement 33 that I have been using is medicated with Rumensin, It has been running somewhere 37 to 38 dollars per hundred.

Our creep ration: 60% cracked corn, 20% cottonseed hulls, and 20% Accuration  range supplement 33.

We always start them off with a non accuration mix to get them started good, once they are eating good we just put the accuration mix on top, it blends in with the other feed so they can adjust to it. Our intakes are about .75% to 1% pounds of feed per body weight per day.  If there intakes get too high for your liking then you can increase the accuration supplement and just decrease the corn.

I believe he could be registered as a 1/2 blood shorthorn plus.

This is our young bull calf. I just wanted to share a few pics. I really don't know what my long term plans with him are. ie... promote him, sell him, or just enjoy having a nice herd bull. I have been trying to concentrate on my shorthorn breeding program, but this guy has always intrigued me. Thoughts?

I was just wondering where you heard of a bull "Devil's Advocate"?

The Big Show / Re: Opinions on the 5-day CO-Synch + CIDR program
« on: April 07, 2013, 09:24:15 AM »
I am going to help set up & breed some cows for a friend and he is wanting to use this program, and here's the question, Do we have to run the cows through the 2ND time for the 2ND shot of PG or can we give 2 shots @ 2 different locations the first time through the chute? I have been told that if you don't give the 2ND shot that you can just as well use the 7-day program and have also been told/heard that you can go through the chute once with the 2 shots at 2 different locations. Please discuss your opinions & results. Thanks in advance. Brent
I would be sure to run them through the second time. The timing of the 2 shots is what really makes this protocol work. We started using the 5-day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol last fall and have seen significant improvement in conception rates (about 20% higher than the 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol).

Thanks, dhs

The Big Show / Re: Best Shorthorn Bull

Best in terms of what?

I second that!! There are so many different areas. For me none of those bulls are the best on the market but it all depends on what your trying to do.

Thanks, dhs

The Big Show / Re: Gestation in shorthorn cattle
« on: February 24, 2013, 07:24:07 PM »
It will very cow to cow but our shorthorn adult cows tend to calve between 290 to 295 days and we have even had a few go as long as 298 days. Our shorthorn heifers typically go 285 to 290 days.  This is much different than our angus cattle that usually go from 275 to 285 days.

Two more!!

The Big Show / Shorthorn Bulls of the Past
« on: August 23, 2012, 03:24:55 PM »
I am trying to put together a list of Shorthorn bulls that are:

1.TH & PHA Free
2. Outcross to Double Stuff, Trump, and Proud Jazz Genetic lines
3. Born before 2004 (Before we knew who was TH & PHA Carriers)
4. Semen still available today for a reasonable price ($100/Unit or less)
5. Bulls that are known to produce show steers or daughters that will produce show steers.

The idea behind this is to find new genetics to use that we may have over looked from the past. These bull may be better than what is available today but were not being used as much because TH & PHA Carriers were making more sell-able cattle.
I am posting the start of the list, please feel free the add more as you can.

My List as follows: Double Leader, Gizmo, Vortec, Steer Maker, Surf, Tequila, and Wide Side

The Big Show / Pasture Fertilization
« on: May 25, 2012, 09:15:38 PM »
I was wanting to know what the recommendations are for pasture fertilization. For example how much 9-23-30 would i need to apply per acre, what time of year is best, and does it help to put it on half in spring and half in fall. Please be very specific and detailed. Also, please give facts not opinions. Just needing to gather info!!!

Thanks, dhs

I just wanted to update some info. Joel Brooks contacted me tonight and informed me that this is acctually a Fringe ET bull calf out of Fringe's dam (Sonny x Double Leader), which is a  Full sib to Get Serious and Absolutly. They are selling 1/2 Semen interest and Full Possession on him.
