The Big Show / Re: Feeding Rice Bran
« on: June 07, 2013, 07:32:14 PM »
So what is the real difference between Stabalized Rice Bran and regular rice bran?  I can't get "stabalized" rice bran in my area, only "regular" pelleted form.  Does it have to do with making it keep longer vs. spoiling?

Davidsonranch,

Stabilized rice bran comes in both meal and pelleted form.  Are you sure what is being referred to as "regular rice bran" isn't just the stabilized meal form?

The Big Show / Re: Best Ear Tag Marker?
« on: March 01, 2013, 06:05:05 AM »
Thanks to everyone who responded to this.  After looking into the Ritchey tags I'm curious if anyone has some sample pictures of tags they have made up with number, sire and birth date?  My concern is that trying to 'write' all that information with the Dremel tool, particularly small letters for the sire, would be time consuming and error prone.  Are you actually doing this for every calf or do you wait to use an engraved tag when you select your replacement heifers?

The Big Show / Best Ear Tag Marker?
« on: February 08, 2013, 05:27:08 AM »
We're looking for the best marker pen to use on blank ear tags.  For years we successfully used Allflex's pen on Allflex tags.  Since they went to the interchangeable tip a couple of years ago we have found the pens to be almost unusable.  The felt is extremely hard and doesn't flow ink very well.  When you attempt to press harder the ink will overflow the tip and blotch the tag.  We add birth date and sire to each tag so we aren't looking to switch to pre-printed tags.  Has anyone had good experiences with another brand that will not fade over time?

Thanks!

You aren't too far from us.  He only had a few straws available and we plan on using them.  Thanks for the offer.

Any interest in moving the semen?  I'm in Wooster, OH.

OH Breeder & JWW,

Thanks for the replies.  How is he on structure?  Any concerns with making them too straight?

The Big Show / Best Cow Types for Dream On

We happened to pick up some Dream On semen that our local rep was looking to move.  For those with experience using him can you share what cow types he works best with and what to avoid?  We're hoping for some moderate framed replacement females out of Maine/Angus based cows.

Thanks!

+1 on  Domination to add depth of body.  He certainly did that on three crossbred cows we used him on.  The bulls out of him had excellent testicular development as well, which was probably a reflection of Domination's own semen quality.  We would have liked to have seen more width and front end extension in them.
