Here is year two in our county fair level attempts at Hogs.
first the big one... he weighed 290 today with 12 days to go... yikes.  Any ideas on what to do feed wise would be helpful.  My Purina guy advised us to put him on Powerfill which we are starting tomorrow when I go get it.  Any other comments will be welcomed.  I know basically nothing about raising pigs...thanks

First:  I believe you should only use the humorous ones!

Second:  Please talk to SP management and see if you can sell them on SP.

I WANT ONE!

I will post a pic of the shirt when I get the design done (hopefully in the next couple of days) and if anyone wants one I will sure ship them (with a portion of the proceeds going to the cattlemens association!) !  Thanks for all your help and playing along!!  It's nice to have a non stressful thread to look at every once and a while!! :) :) :)

Hello fellow planet-eers I need some help.  I have been approached by the local cattlemens association to make them shirts to sell at the fair.  The want a sort of top ten list on the back but they want ones that are geared toward just the beef farmer/producer side of the business not the show aspect.  I have about 6 but I am stuck...help me!!!

I will get the ball rolling...

***If you write more checks to feed stores than grocery stores...

***Family bonding is building fence and making hay...

come on... I know you folks have some good ones... help me out!

THANKS IN ADVANCE :) :) :) :) :)

I hope I am not asking a silly question but... Does everyone use the "group" tie outs, not set up at your trailer? I only ask cause we haven't been to the shorties before (only the chimaines) and we could tie out at the trailer... Just wanting to kinda know what to do before we get there Sunday evening.  Thanks for the help and I am g,ad there were some recommmendations for places to eat! Thanks and see you there :)

The Big Show / Re: Disadvantage of tall exhibitor
« on: February 13, 2013, 08:11:54 AM »
I'm 6'4 been over 6 foot since 6th grade. Being tall can be a disadvantage as far as making cattle look shorter and smaller. It was an even bigger problem for me since i was showing through the 90's when height was in. On the other side if the person is working hard to make it not as noticeable by using the longest stick they can find to keep the calf as far away as possible so the size isn't as noticable and things like that it can really show how good at presenting the calf you are and bump you up in a close class. To this day i still use a show stick instead of my feet to set front legs since i got so use to keeping that distance and other little things I picked up to help keep the calf looking as big as possible. Another way is stay slightly infront of the head with the profile views so that the judge  doesn't see the calf head hitting you at mid rib with prospects .  that profile view is probably the worst one for the judge to see you in the view for making a calf look small when your tall.

That is a great quote to share with my nephew who as a freshman this year is right at six foot and still growing.  Last year we thought he was making his little (young) calf look even littler by being beside her... Good tip, Sir!

That Man Among Boys is a top pick, it seems. Someone sent that also in a PM.

I really appreciate the suggestions :)

Anybody like his showgirl for this year? (the black one)

In my opinion, I really believe Man Among boys is better than two tone. he got use limited his rookie year and his calves were awesome. and The mature pic I saw of him at bull stud blew everything out of the water! also, he might be the hottest bull on the market and wade says he is working pretty much on every type of cow. Good Luck!

Thank you so much for your suggestions and kind words.

I would try northern imProvement on the I-80 and two tone on the red shorty
I would use Jesse James on the I-80. Check out Matt lautners blog and you can see multiple calving reports about Jesse James calves. I love Northern Improvement and it would be a great idea but I tried to buy some the other day and its over $100/straw. For the Re/White cow, I would use Man Among Boys! As a mature bull I think he looks 10x better than two tone. If she would happen to be a TH Carrier, I would use either Tiger Woods or Red Dirt (full brother to leroy brown but clean (I believe he is TH Free. its either red dirt or red bull). Lautner also has a new bull out called steam roller thats a troubador son and I think he could work for you! Good luck

Thanks!  I appreciate the input.  I was glad to see that Tiger Woods suggestion.  We had bought some in anticipation to use on her.  And I have seen tons of good comments on the Two Tone and Jesse James calves.  Both of these gals are pretty sound, but don't have those 'monster feet' the judges seem to love and they could use some more hair.  I can't wait to see what comes of it!  Thanks again for your help, folks!

KEEP EM COMING  :) :) :)

The heifer that the nephew is showing this year...she is an I-80 out of a Sin City (the black one)
and a past 4H project cow, the red shortie.
He wants to make his own steer for 4H or a quality heifer he can show.  Thanks in advance.

The Big Show / Re: Cooked Corn?
« on: February 08, 2013, 10:22:48 AM »
Thanks for the post, I have wondered about this method.  We have been feeding steamed corn to my nephews steer... would I use that in the crock pot or regular corn?

Whole corn, start with a small batch like 3 pounds of dry matter work up from there as they get use to it. It will surprise you how big it cooks up too. What you plan to feed in the AM start the night before and let it cool good before you feed it, sure don't want to scald their mouth.

Good luck!

Thank you so much.  We only feed a total of 4 cups of the corn a day (2 am, 2 pm)  I think my regular size crock pot would work. lol.  So...on the low or warm heat setting all day?  And I assume you add enough water to cover it, or more?

I am so glad someone asked this question!!
