The Big Show / Re: Bulls dont live long.

I would think the bulls have a lot of injuries being collected 2-3 times each week.

Some aren't accepted quickly and go away, sometimes to a herd for natural service.

Too expensive to keep in a stud if they are not selling.

I believe I have seen New Yorker listed at 70" tall and other bulls of the era at 68".   No doubt these are exaggerations, and photos were taken from ground level to increase appearance of height.

70" tall at two years would be as big or bigger than purebred Chi and Holstein bulls.

I have just a few Angus cows, but would like to see what Rosebank Connection 69 (1979), Mon Reposa Chapparal (1971)and Loma Lanes Cracker Jack (1977)would do.   I think they would make moderate and efficient females.

Shoshone has a Wye background so it is easy to see why he would make such good females.

I see nothing wrong with that Rito bull.

Manhattan threw some outstanding cattle.  Personally, I would like to see what he would do on today's soggy females.

I called the breeder of Manhattan this morning and hope to find a picture somewhere.

For grins, I may flush one of my Angus cows this spring to Patriot.

I hope a Red Angus guy would have some interest in a flush.

Lovana had some outstanding numbers as I recall.  He was promoted heavily in Angus Journal

Power Play sired some influential cattle in his day.

I bought my Dads tanks and semen inventory and have semen available on these old school Angus bulls.  Dates reflect their approximate birth date.

Emulous TN 70     1968
Earl Marshall Legend      1975
Sayre Patriot            1976
Black Ballot F65     1962
Shearbrook Shoshone
PS Power Play
Rito 8799              1968     #6002229
Lemar Eileenmeer Lad 549    'Sky High'
Rito 2   878

And these old show bulls, or sires of show bulls from 78-90 or so:
TC Total 410
QLC Winchester
Baldridge Oscar
Stardust Expansion
WAF Trendsetter
Rosebank Connection 68
Loma Lanes Cracker Jack
Bonview Spectrum
Mon Reposa Chapparal
Manhatten of Indian Creek
SAF Fame
Nelson Bold Ruler
Dr Spock
Wild Turkey
Dameron Line Drive

I welcome discussion and memories on these bulls.   Many were labeled as hard calving but I would not be scared to use them on my mature Angus cows.

I would welcome pictures of the bulls and any progeny you would share.

First bull is Black Ballot F65
Second is Shearbrook Shoshone

The Big Show / Uses for old semen tanks?
« on: October 27, 2017, 08:32:26 AM »
I am looking for uses for old semen tanks that no longer hold nitrogen long enough.

Cooler for stalls or barn?

Cut out ranch design silhouette using water jet or plasma cutter?

Trash can?

Drill outer shell and fill with expanding foam for short term nitrogen transfer for branding or other?

Any leads for someone who can cut the design?

The Big Show / I need to get a bull from Illinois to Washington

Seeking a ride for a bull from Illinois to Washington state.

Sometime in next month or so.

The Big Show / Re: Speakers/radios at shows
« on: October 11, 2017, 01:28:31 PM »
Please consider that many folks do not appreciate the loud music, or genre of music you might play.

Based upon many years of experience, radios are more of a nuisance to your neighbors than welcome music.

One family this summer played music very loud and included rap music littered with f- bombs.

I finally went over and pulled the plug so the neighboring kids did not had to hear that nonsense.

Don't go too loud and watch the language.

You certainly have the right to listen to music, but not the right to infringe upon your neighbors.

Can you please explain what you mean about rate?

If you mean rate of gain, or weight per day of age, many of the cattle of 30-40 years ago had similar production and growth performance but are 30-50 pounds lower at weaning and up to 100 pounds lower at yearling epds.

I don't understand how similar performance would result in such drastic differences in epds.

Thank you sir.

I don't have much faith in epds when comparing older and newer pedigrees.

Older pedigrees have very low growth epds but somehow managed to weigh the same or more than today's cattle.

The Big Show / Older Shorthorin bulls

I found some Shorthorn semen in my Dad's old tanks.

Any value or use for these bulls?

I'm not a Shorthorn guy, and I respect the vast history and knowledge by many members.

May have a guy interested.

Would there be a market for bulls with no epd's?

Check it out and contact me.

I have no idea about shipping to Canada.  I can ask the shipper.

I have two units of semen on an old Angus named Black Ballot F65.  He was born in 1962.
He is a son of the popular Scottish champion Ballot of Belladrum (shown in picture).   A unit of Belladrum sold some time back for $3200.

These are being used to develop super-efficient, moderate, well-muscled cattle.

I am looking for someone interested in sharing some flushes.

Knabe-I have yet to make the contact to sent me, but plan to do so.
