The Big Show / Re: Heifer didn't stick?
« on: July 12, 2013, 11:47:32 AM »
We had a heifer (not a show heifer) cycle back at about 80 days last year.  She had been with a bull at the time she should have cycled back at 21 days and basically up until the point she came up open.  I would get her checked and just know it happens.

The Big Show / Re: Bad Udders
« on: June 26, 2013, 09:30:04 AM »
I wish we would have been more savvy about bad udders and paying attention to that trait when we got started into this business years ago.  We started with two pairs and that is how we have built our herd.  Well the one cow from the one pair that made it around here has a bad udder and she has of course passed that on to some of her offspring.  We have been convinced that eventually this problem will become less of a problem the further we get away from that cows genetics.  Ugh! Countless hours spent on my part with bad udders.  We have officially started culling cows with a bad udder.  I know now you don't have to have bad udders to have clubby cows.

It sounds like he is just being a turd and wanting that halter off NOW! Like the others have said make him wait until he can stand nice.  He will catch on soon enough.

The Big Show / Re: Air movement in cooler
« on: June 13, 2013, 12:10:39 PM »
We live in CO so we have little humidity to deal with, so we use a swamp cooler (it is cheap and easy to run) and a large fan blowing on the calves.  We also make sure the room is dark.  I am sure it could be better, but it is pretty cool in that room and we always seem to have a decent amount of hair.  Not Stock Show hair, but county fair hair.  If I walk in that barn and the cooler is just on without the big fan it makes a huge difference in the temperature.  Air movement is big.  I would say the bigger the fan the better.  I know a box fan wouldn't cut it for us.

The Big Show / Re: Tiger woods bull
« on: June 04, 2013, 11:36:27 AM »
We had a Tiger Woods steer last year.  He was a good calf.  He never made it to his final show date as he wasn't sound at all.  We have never had a calf out of this cow that wasn't sound until him.  He is however the yummiest piece of beef I have ever eaten.

The Big Show / Re: Any Rumor mill calves?

Telos, it is kinda a funny story now, but it wasn't at the time....a little accidental mating.  She is a Meyer Meyer calf.  She isn't my favorite calf in the pasture, but she will darn sure work.

Just thought I would update on our flush mate to Rumor Mill.  She is still looking amazing and since calving has adopted a set of orphan twins we wound up with.  We didn't encourage her to do this they were just out on pasture with the cows and we were feeding them twice a day and supplementing with creep.  Before we knew it she had snatched them up.  So, she is raising her calf and one of the twins full time and feeding the other twin enough so that we only have to supplement that twin one partial feeding/day.  All of the calves are looking good as is the cow.  On top of all of that she bred back and we should be expecting a calf next spring.

The Big Show / Re: Injured Calf Question
« on: May 20, 2013, 12:46:41 PM »
Muddy Creek, is it a calf that is still on the cow or an older calf?  If it's a calf that is still on the cow it seems like whenever we have a calf that gets stepped on it is always a hind foot/leg.  That may be something to think of as well.  We had one last year that got stepped on and she was so sore on that foot/leg for weeks.  I thought she wasn't going to come out of it.  Now as a yearling+ you cannot even tell.  I would however check her to make sure it isn't something else.

The Big Show / Cost/Head/Day to run cows
« on: May 13, 2013, 10:10:50 AM »
We are running a few cows for some folks and was wondering what cost/head/day people usually charge for both feeding hay, and running on pasture.  Some are pairs and some are heifers so.......  and just an FYI we are in the great state of CO.

LA200 and some injectable wormers are the worst.  Give it time and it will go away.

I think that livestock judging and horse judging are two of the best things a youngster can do.  It teaches them so many important skills.  Congrats to her!

Yesterday we hit 82 degrees.  Then last night wind, hail, small tornando, 5 inches of rain, flooded roads and a high of 42 today.

Like we say here in CO "If you don't like the weather wait five minutes".  Hope everyone made it through okay.

Shes holding toghether real well JMO-I think a guy would use the bull based upon how shes doing-plus shes a tank-gotta love the way she looks. Did I mention-doner quality-JMO O0

Mark, it is something we are considering.  We were waiting to see what kind of cow she was going to make.  Could definitely be in her future.
