The Big Show / Stock Show Kindness
« on: March 19, 2020, 04:55:55 PM »
The world is a bit of a crazy place right now so I thought it was a good time to start a thread about random acts of stock show kindness. Below are two of my stories, be sure to share your own!

This past year at the Manitoba Ag Ex we had four females in the grand drive and were waiting outside because it was quite warm in the barns. We were pretty far from our stall and the rest of our crew was getting bull calves ready so when a huge gust of wind came up and covered all of our heifers in dust and shavings we were about to go into panic mode. At the perfect time an Angus breeder I had never met said "Come with me!", marched over to someone else's stall, borrowed their blower and carefully blew out our females! He didn't have anything to gain from it but he sure made our day!!

One year at Agribition I was leading two heifer calves to tie outs and until then we hadn't realized that one was just coming into heat. I got separated from the rest of our crew and was really struggling to keep the heifers from jumping each other. A breeder I didn't know very well at the time took one heifer from me and I assumed she was just going to tie her up so I could wait for the rest of our crew to come back and help me. Instead she said "I'll follow you" and led the heifer all the way to tie outs. Keep in mind that this was back when they were really far away and it was -25 Celsius with wind on a good day!

Let's hear your feel good stories!

This one went from Denver contender to county fair bottom ender in a hurry.

The Big Show / Heifer Calf

I dont say this about any of them but this one has been special since day one. At her first show she won the all breeds heifer calf jackpot and was Reserve Hereford Female. Her next show is Agribition and then she sells at the Wascana Cattle Company Complete Herd Dispersal on December 21. WCC 100B Jessica 9100G

I try not to get excited about baby calves but this one might be fun to watch. These pictures were taken 12 days apart- at 10 hours old and today. JDH 4X Ultimate 263Z 94B X MBF 121C Charlotte 321E.

The Big Show / Genetics for Generations Hereford Sale
« on: September 18, 2016, 08:27:07 PM »
Myself (Barefoot Polled Herefords), along with NCX & Glenrose Polled Herefords are very excited to be hosting Genetics for Generations on October 9 in Vegreville, Alberta. This will be the first sale that we've hosted together and the cool part is that all of my calves are sired by the very first herdsire I ever purchased who I happened to buy right here on Steerplanet!

Below is the link to our catalog, let me know what you think!

The Big Show / The quiet ones are more fun!
« on: September 04, 2016, 09:25:50 PM »
My coworkers talked me into bringing two heifers to put on our parade float this past weekend. The heifers loved all of the extra attention and the kids and their families seemed to really like seeing something a little less traditional at the parade.

The Big Show / For my fellow Hereford fans!
« on: August 22, 2016, 10:28:11 PM »
What do you think of this one? She's a March heifer that was purchased in dam from Blair Athol Polled Herefords last fall. Her dam is a Blair Athol Classic daughter and she's sired by an NJW bull who is a maternal brother to Trust, Hometown and Downhome. She was second in class at our Canadian Junior Nationals and she'll be my show heifer this year.

The Big Show / PB Hereford Steer
« on: January 07, 2016, 11:23:29 PM »
I don't usually do the whole steer thing but some friends had this guy for sale and the price was right so I decided to try and have some fun with him. He was born mid February and our target show will be the Canadian Hereford Junior Nationals at the beginning of August. I hope to jackpot him at least once or twice before then and he may end up at Calgary for the Stampede if he looks the part. He's already looking to be a lot better steer than I originally thought he was. I don't have a current weight on him.

1st picture is the picture that I bought him off. This is in September before he was weened.
2nd picture is after a rough clip job and one month on feed.
3rd & 4th are of him now after two months on feed.

So what do you steer guys think? I think he might have a shot if he was only competing against other Herefords but most of our shows are by weight instead of breed so I'm curious as to how he'll look beside the clubbies and crossbreds.

The Big Show / Deformed Mature Steer Pictures

A friend shared this post on Facebook- see the link for the full post.

It's very cool- anyone know what this is called? What's also strange is that the animal has a cow head and a bull body. Looks like a healthy guy though.

The Big Show / Maggots in a castration site
« on: August 21, 2015, 11:21:42 AM »
We banded a late March bull calf two weeks ago and two days ago I found maggots in the open wound where his testicles meet his twist. He's been Cylenced regularly all summer but I covered his body in fly spray to keep the flies off of him and for the past two nights I've been rinsing out the wound with a garden hose and then spraying iodine into the wound. There doesn't appear to be any pus or anything like that and steer seems to be feeling fine- he's eating well and lets me clean it out without moving around too much or kicking at me a lot.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could get rid of the maggots so the wound can heal or what else I should be doing? Thanks in advance.

The Big Show / Western Water Hemlock
« on: August 14, 2015, 11:17:53 PM »
Does anyone have experience grazing cattle on land with Western Water Hemlock? Due to the drought in Alberta we are very short on pasture and we have a piece of land that we just fenced off and are planning to use but it's full of Hemlock. In school they said that as long as you pick what you can and don't over graze it should be fine but I'm still nervous to put my cows on this pasture, however with the lack of feed in our area I don't have much choice. I've been picking all that I can and I'll continue to do so. Other than the Hemlock this is the best pasture that my cows will have seen all summer- I'm 5'7 and the Reed Canary Grass is between knee and shoulder height on me. Comments from anyone familar with the poisonous weed would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Big Show / Sold two heifers this weekend
« on: August 12, 2015, 04:12:48 PM »
This weekend I sold two heifer calves to two young 4-H members. I'm really excited to see how the heifers turn out for them!

The boy was busy catching grasshoppers so he didn't have much to say about his heifer but when his sister met her heifer she said "She's so quiet and has such nice hair and stands so nice. Do you have anymore? I think I would like to buy another one!"

The Big Show / calf uninterested in feed
« on: July 18, 2015, 07:19:37 PM »
I have a bull calf this year that's driving me crazy! I've tried for over a month to start him on feed but he's 100% uninterested. My other three calves love it and he comes running into the barn with them but then he just lays down- he won't even smell it! I've tried both a show ration and plain oats but he won't look at either of them. I know that weaning him could help but I'd really like to leave him on the cow for a few more months. He's super quiet, so it's not his disposition and it's not the feed pans either because I've tried a few different ones. I'm thinking of locking him in the barn for a few hours with water and the feed and not letting him out until he finally tries it. Any other suggestions?
