The Big Show / Feed Question
« on: October 17, 2017, 07:47:18 AM »
What is the best bagged feed in today's market? Have been feeding Show Rite (Throttled Up) the last couple years and the quality in my personal has just diminished greatly!  Nothing like it was.... say 2 years ago!!

The Big Show / S Rice Bran vs Power Fuel
« on: February 23, 2017, 12:42:10 AM »
I've read posts on here about both products and understand you can't use both in conjuction with one another.  My question...is one more superior than the other or both basically the same thing?

The Big Show / Implant strategy/suggestions
« on: February 21, 2017, 11:11:58 PM »
Looking for suggestions on what Revalor implant, as there are several I should use in this scenario. Revalor bc I have the gun.
Have a steer weighing 980lbs. He's sound with 102 days to go for our terminal show. He's maxed out @ 24lbs feed (Show Rite Throttled Up) with 2 big scoops of cottonseed hulls and 16oz Power Fuel all split in a morning and evening feeding. Typically wouldn't implant at this stage but I think we're going to need a bump. Have 3 jackpot shows between now and our final show. Daughters last year in so trying to make it count. Our normal ADG with this much traveling is not going to happen. Looking to weigh in somewhere around 1350 June 2nd. Thanks for any suggestions

The Big Show / Farmers Almanac "Best Days"
« on: January 10, 2017, 03:46:14 PM »
I've read on here about ppl using the Almanac's "best days"  for "cutting hair to encourage growth" on show cattle. Anyone with personal experience on this? Sounds interesting. Looks like Jan 2017 days are 2, 3, 30 and 31. Feb 3,4,27. Do you just pick a month and do it one time per winter? When "cutting" are you clipping the animal as if you were at a show or bringing the hair down much shorter to the body. From some old posts I read, results were quite positive. No specific directive on how they go about it though. Strange questions I'm sure but thought I'd throw it out there. Thanks

The Big Show / Sunshine/Hair
« on: January 09, 2017, 03:37:49 PM »
Is sun an absolute necessity for growing hair? We plan to keep them under a lean to this time of year (Jan-Feb) due to the weather with mud and tearing up our very small pasture area. They are exposed to the cold, have one shear wall to block the majority of the north wind. Use Cylence every 2 weeks to control any type of lice issue. We have a decently haired steer.. like it to stay that way.  Thanks for your time

The Big Show / Explaining a judges ruling
« on: June 08, 2016, 04:58:45 AM »
Have you ever had a placing where 90% of the other people there come up to you and ask...."did we actually just see what we thought we saw?". We are a humble people and don't whine and complain about much of anything. I teach my daughter that all the judges decisions are based on his own personal opinion (hopefully). We aren't to go out and talk trash or degrade others if you don't win. Take it with your head held high and bring one bigger and better the next year. Inside yourself though, you know that it probably should have been different.  I want her to take disappointment with a grain of salt and move on with positivity. It's hard though when it looks obvious. How do you all take it and explain to the kids?

The Big Show / Cottonseed "hulls"
« on: March 23, 2016, 11:57:35 PM »
I've read all the threads on here about cottonseed hulls. I understand that there's not much in the nutritional value but how about in the finishing look. I have ppl out west of me that sware cottonseed hulls just give there show steers that big bulk muscular look. I know that cottonseed hulls don't/won't replace genetics just like show coat doesn't replace genetics for hair. But it's a edge and it helps and works for alot of ppl. Anyone have experience feeding CSH for that reason and not just a filler. Thanks

The Big Show / loose stools
« on: February 23, 2016, 04:06:26 AM »
Steer is weighing 1150. Eating 24 lbs of Show Rite Throttled Up feed and gets 4 slabs of timothy/Orchard grass(<<older cut) a day. Nothing has changed in his diet. I give Probias every 2 weeks and his stools have been considerably loose than normal. Not water but thinner than pancake mix. I've read on here about sulfer bolus. We have a tractor supply near by that sells Sustain Cattle III. I've never used it before . Is that the same thing ppl.are referring to? Read the directions and it sounds like doom and gloom if not given right. Gonna also pic up some  cotton seed hulls. Have a show in a couple weeks and would like him tightened up by then. This sound about the right path to go? The Sustain Cattle III has me a lil stand offish because it doesn't say "Sulfer Bolus" SO I want to make sure I'm administering the right stuff. Thanks for your time

The Big Show / Showmanship Profile Stance
« on: February 22, 2016, 08:20:54 PM »
Having a heck of a time with our 4-H steer. Having a issue when pull his back left leg up for the profile stance. He won't put any weight on it. He will let us pull it forward but he stands there with the tip of his hoof touching the ground. His leg isn't hurt. He walks fine. Need to somehow get him to shift some weight to that leg. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

The Big Show / Adding in Barley
« on: January 27, 2015, 04:47:21 PM »
Each feeding he's gets...12lbs Southern States 13% show calf bagged feed, 8oz SureChamp, 4oz Show Bloom, 1lb dry whole shell corn cooked. (Weighs approx 3.5-4lbs cooked) pad of hay and now adding in barley and corn oil. This steer was a replacement for one we had to get rid of. He was a little light on his weight hence the reason for cooking corn originally and getting him up on feed. I would like to replace the cooked corn for Barley. Would be much easier and I hear the finish (cover) is better and smoother. Wanting to know what the equivalency would be in Barley to what I'm feeding in corn.

The Big Show / Question about this site?
« on: April 22, 2014, 02:06:49 AM »
I'm curious what this site is about? Is it for people to pass on creative ideas they have learned or came up with to make things easier on others. Is it for experienced people to help the inexperienced/novice with problems they might have in their cattle. Is it for big ranches and cattlemen to talk to one another and look down at someone with 2-8 head.  I look at alllll these posts. I look at how many views there are on a post and how many actual replies. Someone asks about feed and there are 270 views with no replies. Are people are on the net  just viewing a cattle forum that know nothing about cattle? Someone posts about Cliven Bundy and there are 5240 views with 128 replies. Post about a steer off feed and water 220 views and 1 reply. My 15 y/o daughter took the initiative to get on here and ask a few questions about her 4-H steer w bare response if any. We are just piss ants with 2 $1100.00 show calves. I was just curious to what the site is really about, might have gotten the wrong idea when I joined. To the one or two who responded to her concerns Thanks.
