The Big Show / Walks Alone / BIM Sons
« on: April 03, 2019, 04:32:26 PM »
Hello all,

Are there any popular Walks Alone / BIM Sons that can provide the power and appeal without the attitude? I've used and had great success with I-Believe. I'm trying to come up with a couple more black bulls to use this year.

*Angus or Balancer commercial cattle for dams. Trying to create a showy, county fair winning calf that is still capable of growing.
*We care more about actual stoutness and power than hair as we don't really have the time to invest in the great hair.

The Big Show / Bull Live Birth Weight
« on: June 06, 2018, 09:23:30 PM »
How many of these AI bulls (club calf or PB) have true birthweights put down? It seems when comparing posted BW of these bulls (expecting calves to come out this way) to what I end up with in calves I come out a little high, also we don't have large cows or a continental base, current cow herd is mostly 1200-1350# and >50% Angus except for a few PB Charolais from a few years ago (grow like crazy) and a few PB Angus I just bought. Is it commonplace for these numbers to be tweaked? I don't know everything about this side of the business except that these numbers are an honor system.

What spurred this question: Have never raised a bull myself but would like to leave some really good AI calves intact this year or future. I think our management practices and genetics have improved enough to do so.

The Big Show / Places to Sell Cattle (Other than Classifieds here)
« on: August 07, 2017, 11:27:49 AM »
What other websites do you use to sell show calves aside from here on Steer Planet? I don't have enough to make a sale out of (2 halter broken heifers and 2 or 3 unbroken steers) so I want to be able to post and let people just contact me, additionally, I'm going off to college at the end of the week so I will only be able to come back on weekends so my need to sell is increasing (lol)

The Big Show / Hottest Club Calf Bull
« on: April 30, 2016, 10:23:52 AM »
Who is the big deal bull these days? Siring show steers out of the top of my herd angus influenced cows. Can use Red or Black or chromed up calves, I like MAB. No roans, shorthorns, smokes, or chars.I know I could search but wanted some more current info.

The Big Show / SHOW STEERS
« on: November 26, 2015, 07:40:25 PM »
Strange topic, but I was wondering what I may be doing wrong. I have advertised on steerplanet, local trader magazines, some other advertisements like fliers in local ag businesses, and several facebook pages. They are cheap and good. Well broke. Those veteran sellers give me a shout-out please and tell me what I may be able to do because I think if they aren't gone by January I will be forced to sale barn these steers.

I took the best steers of our calf crop put them in a seperate pen and halter broke them. I keep them on limited feed and they could dominate a lot of rate of gain competitions. The majority of these calves are very stocky and will pack on the muscle once on full feed. Currently they get a small amount of protein and 5 lbs of corn every other day per calf (every other day so big calves don't bully the feed away from smaller ones. I am gonna add pictures asap.

The Big Show / Best Marketing Avenues
« on: September 30, 2015, 10:46:12 PM »
What are good free or affordable marketing avenues are available for marketing halter broken steers. I am 16 in FFA and 4H and this year I took the best of the steers at weaning and halter broke them. I have placed advertisements in Trader magazines like Hawkeye Trader, made fliers and I'm putting them in local Ag. Businesses, and I posted in Steer Planet Classifieds. Anything else you more experienced cattlemen can think of?

The Big Show / Double Black Clubby or Simmental Bull
« on: April 28, 2015, 04:36:34 PM »
For making show calves, anybody know of a homozygous black bull (breeding red cows, do not wish to have red show calves). TH carrier or white on face is ok.

The Big Show / Cage for new Scale
« on: December 03, 2014, 07:46:25 PM »
I bought a scale and I finally went and picked it up today. I still am wondering, if I have a local welder make a cage out of pipe for the frame how much would it cost me. The platform is around 7' long.

Has anyone else done this and how much did it cost?
How much do next summers show string weigh right now? Once I get my scale up and running I'll be eager to compare.

The Big Show / Making Visits to Bull Studs
« on: October 12, 2014, 09:43:41 PM »
-What day(s) are you allowed to go visit the Nichols Bull stud in Iowa?
-Could you tell me of some other studs in my area? (picture of my county attached) I will travel a max. of around 3 hours.
-If you recommend a stud please tell me some of the major bulls that are collected there, Club Calves, Maines, Simmentals, Angus, Gelbviehs, Herefords, Charolais, or Red Angus. Or if you like some other breed I will listen.

Thanks in Advance, Jack

The Big Show / Ready 2 Rumble
« on: September 09, 2014, 11:04:44 PM »
I have a heifer that is bred to calve in April, I will be holding her back to Jan to get her back in cycle with the others. So she will be one month short of 4 on her second calf. She needs more spring of rib, and depth without loosing the look and muscle and size. Would this be a good match?

Haven't heard of many calf reports out of him. If you have any outstanding ordinary or awful post them please.   ;D Thanks!

The Big Show / Fall Show Calf Sale MO/IA/IL
« on: August 03, 2014, 09:14:04 PM »
I live in extreme North East Missouri and I am trying to help a friend find a heifer, I would only buy if there were to be a bargain  (thumbsup). We live around Wayland and Canton, MO or you may have heard of Keokuk, IA. Would travel up to two hours maybe 2.5. Closer is better. Budget 2-3K per head. Mostly interested in mainstream type show cattle as in Heat Wave / Monopoly line. Clubby in general.

The Big Show / Types of Bedding
« on: July 15, 2014, 08:21:54 AM »
I keep my show calves inside an old barn basement (by my dads house) when I have the option to be out there. There are 100 year old draft horse stalls that are the length of a fat steer and about 6.5 feet wide. I keep one calf, 1 fan, and one feed box (wood/permanent) per stall. What do all of the more experienced serious showmen on here use? I have straw now. I also use straw at shows which is ok but if I have one hairy enough to be fitted then they have to be tied standing somewhere away from the straw  :-\ . What would be better for shows and at home? I have a good source of straw but I haven't explored the options of other bedding. I don't really know of any but wood shavings because I use that for my rabbits.
