The Big Show / Joke of the the Day.......NC
« on: December 07, 2011, 09:49:19 AM »
In light of this balmy weather.......  I will throw out another cattle buyer joke just for fun...

A woman was driving on a mountain road when she hit an icy spot, slid off the road, and buried her car in a snowdrift. A cattle buyer came along and stopped to help.  After some shoveling, he was able to pull her car back onto the road.
"I might have died up here if you hadn't come along.  Here's $100 for your help," gushed the grateful woman.

"Shucks... I can't take your money.  I'm just glad I could help," drawled the cattle buyer.

The adventurous woman was not only grateful, but very attracted to the gallant and ruggedly handsome cattle buyer.  "If I can't show my appreciation with money, how about this?" she purred and began to seductively unbutton her coat and then her dress, exposing her curvaceous body clad in extremely scant and lacy undergarments.

The cattle buyer stared intently and then politely replied, "I guess I'll have to pass... I'd freeze to death up here wearing those things."

I sold a pair of heifers into Central Texas.  I am looking for a ride for them in the next couple of weeks.  Anyone hauling cattle in that direction?

The Big Show / Feed room and the pet mice that live there.......
« on: September 26, 2011, 04:51:04 PM »
It must be going to be a rough winter.   This fall is the worst for mice I have ever seen.  I am wondering if any of you have any "OUT OF THE BOX" tricks besides Decon and Bar Bait, for discouraging or repelling mice.

I have been using spray foam and steel wool to seal cracks and keep feed swept up, but I am having a hard time keeping cats around because of owl and coyotes.  Looking for some "better living through chemistry" ideas.  Thanks!

The Big Show / Joke for the day..not cattle related
« on: March 28, 2011, 11:53:08 AM »
Best joke for 2011 so far.....

George Bush, Queen Elizabeth, and Vladimir Putin all die and go to hell.

While there, they spy a red phone and ask what the phone is for.  The devil tells them it is for calling back to Earth.

Putin asks to call Russia and talks for 5 minutes.  When he is finished the devil informs him that the cost is a million dollars, so Putin writes him a check.

Next Queen Elizabeth calls England and talks for 30 minutes. When she is finished the devil informs her that the cost is 6 million dollars, so she writes him a check.

Finally George Bush gets his turn and talks for 4 hours. When he is finished the devil informs him that the cost is $5.00. When Putin hears this he goes ballistic and asks the devil why Bush got to call the USA so cheaply.

The devil smiles and replies: "Since Obama took over, the country has gone to hell, so it's a local call."

The Big Show / A Christmas Poem for you from Cowz
« on: December 24, 2010, 09:56:42 AM »
'Twas the night before Christmas & out on the ranch
The pond was froze over & so was the branch.
The snow was piled up belly-deep to a mule.
The kids were all home on vacation from school,
And happier young folks you never did see-
Just all sprawled around a-watchin' TV.
Then suddenly, some time around 8 o'clock,
There came a surprise that gave them a shock!
The power went off, the TV went dead!
When Grandpa came in from out in the shed
With an armload of wood, the house was all dark.
"Just what I expected," they heard him remark.
"Them power line wires must be down from the snow.
Seems sorter like times on the ranch long ago."
"I'll hunt up some candles," said Mom. "With their light,
And the fireplace, I reckon we'll make out all right."
The teen-agers all seemed enveloped in gloom.
Then Grandpa came back from a trip to his room,
Uncased his old fiddle & started to play
That old Christmas song about bells on a sleigh.
Mom started to sing, & 1st thing they knew
Both Pop & the kids were all singing it, too.
They sang Christmas carols, they sang "Holy Night,"
Their eyes all a-shine in the ruddy firelight.
They played some charades Mom recalled from her youth,
And Pop read a passage from God's Book of Truth.
They stayed up till midnight-and, would you believe,
The youngsters agreed 'twas a fine Christmas Eve.
 Grandpa rose early, some time before dawn;
And when the kids wakened, the power was on..
"The power company sure got the line repaired quick,"
Said Grandpa - & no one suspected his trick.
Last night, for the sake of some old-fashioned fun,
He had pulled the main switch - the old Son-of-a-Gun!

Merry Christmas to you all!

It is that time of year again!??  Dr. Libby Frazier of Pfizer has generously offered up the hospitality trailer in the yards to our group again.

Seems like we get the most "Planeteers" around for club calf display and Maine sale ....so how about 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 15, 2011?  By the Railroad bridge, Pfizer trailer,NWSS Yards.

The Maine Sale starts at 3 pm, so if we visited for about an hour, that should give folks time to grab a seat in the arena in time for the sale.  Thoughts, comments?

The Big Show / People's perceptions of organic meats, ranching .....etc.
« on: November 05, 2010, 12:40:38 PM »
I had the honor of being asked to help judge an FFA extemporaneous speech contest last night.  I enjoyed it immensely and really was impressed by the speaking ability and knowlege base of the kids.  The parents on the other hand could stand some agricultural education.

A wonderful young man gave a great presentation on how modern ag producers can adapt their operations to produce organic foods for the consumer.  The panel of judges were required to collectively ask 5 minutes worth of relevant questions on the presented topic.  I asked a question relative to animal drug withdrawal times, feed additives, etc.  Presentation over.  Young man gets silver award for a job very well done.

After the event, a mother (not his) comes up to the judges and tells us that we were all wrong.  Organic beef only comes from feedlots were the cattle are not subject to standing knee deep in filth, manure and urine, day after day. " You know dont you, that that is how we get nitrates in meat is because the animal absorbs it from standing in filth"?   We could not convince her that organic meats come from certified programs that put limits on types of feeds, medicines, vaccines, etc.  She could not be swayed.  I tried my best to be congenial and even gave her a couple of websites to look at later.

We need to look for any opportunity to set people straight on the American beef industry.  THEY WALK AMONG US!

The Big Show / Has anyone been following the USDA hearings on GIPSA?
« on: September 24, 2010, 03:44:52 PM »
Troy Marshall of Burlington Colorado is a fellow Colorado State grad and a brilliant agricultural writer / columnist.  I always love to hear what he has to say about politics and how it relates to the current cattle industry.

If you are interested in the GIPSA proceedings, here is an article I really like:  http://beefmagazine.com/cowcalfweekly/0924-i-dont-talk-gipsa/

I had been trying to follow the current stuff on the GIPSA argument, but I have to admit, I'm pretty sick of it too.... ;)
