The Big Show / What do you consider a good flush?
« on: June 22, 2011, 01:36:08 PM »
Just got 7 good embryos and 4 degens from the first time flushing my Net Worth donor.  Considering she got the generic first time dose I thought this was pretty good.  I know there are some folks on here that do a lot of flushing.  What do you consider a good flush.  I would personally like to be in the 10 - 15 embryo count.  Anything over 20 starts to worry me a little about blowing an ovary.  Just thought it would be interesting to hear some opinions and experiences.

« on: April 03, 2011, 07:26:57 PM »
This heifer is 4 days old.  We've been anxiously awaiting this one!  Our style calves have been real nice so far.

Edited 10/01/2011:
This heifer has really come on as of late.  Let me know what you think!  This heifer has a 3/30 birthdate.

This is a pregnancy test that can be given 18 days post insemination.  Anyone tried it?  What did you think?

The Big Show / One of those nights!
« on: March 07, 2011, 09:47:19 PM »
So today I get home from work and check a bred heifer that is due to calve anytime by the way she looks.  She has two feet sticking out with normal presentation. I think to myself "Cool. This is gonna be easy!".  Big mistake!  I keep waiting and there is absolutely no progress.  Just a heifer getting worn out.

I get my cousin to give me a hand and we walk out the to the barn to get the heifer in the chute and sure enough there is a skunk standing between us and the bred heifer and he/she is not budging!  I go to the house to get the .22 come back and have 5 misfires until I get the sucker. The whole time my cousin is just laughing at me!  The smell was awful as you all can imagine. As soon as we get the heifer out of the pen I take a short cut with her through the barn to get to the holding pen that leads to the chute.  Right when we get in the barn our resident barn cats start fighting.  She got spooked and then knocks over our upright showbox, two shelving units and bent my nephew's prize showstick into a pretzel looking shape!

After many curse words we finally get her in the chute and get the calf out alive.  Before I went in the calf was up and nursing.  As soon as I got into the house my wife started carrying on about how bad I smelled.

I just keep thinking back to my initial thought....."Cool. This is gonna be easy!"

The Big Show / Calf shelters
« on: February 01, 2011, 12:35:13 PM »
I know there are quite a few people on here who have a large number of cows.  We've been expanding our herd and with that expansion we need some more shelter for early born calves(January and February).  I'm located in Central Illinois so weather and wind can really be harsh(like right now for example).  What I'm wondering is what kind of Calf Huts/shelters do you guys use and what works the best?  Thanks in advance.

The Big Show / Calving 2011
« on: January 06, 2011, 09:16:57 AM »
I've officially entered the most exciting and nerve-wrecking time of the year.  Already had two calves.  One was a heifer by TC Aberdeen 759 and a bull by SAV Heavy Hitter.  The bull calf came early this morning.  I thought the cow was acting a little strange so I put her in the barn.  I got up twice at midnight and 4a.m. and didn't see anything until I went out to chore around 7.  The bull calf was already up and nursing!  To me....that's one of the most relieving sights in the world!  Best of luck to everyone with their calving season!  Have fun but also remember to be careful!

Does anyone know where I might be able to find some semen on this bull?  I know that he died a while back.

The Big Show / Truck question
« on: October 05, 2010, 08:50:35 AM »
Ok, I'm finally going to throw in the towel on my 6.0 Powerstroke.  I just can't afford the maintenance and the wife told me to find something else.  I'm looking at 2007/2008 chevy Duramax trucks.  Can I hear some of the good and the bad about these trucks?  Can't believe I'm thinking about getting a Chevy.......

The Big Show / Genex Sexed Semen

I know when sexed semen first came out it was only recommended for heifers.  Is Genex Sexed semen suitable for cows?

The Big Show / Lowline qualification question
« on: August 23, 2010, 09:01:02 AM »
I was looking at some cattle yesterday at one of my buddy's pastures and he had a pretty moderate angus heifer.  Not the itty bitty so called defect.  Just moderate.  If these were to be used with lowline genetics would they at most only be 1/2 blood lowlines if bred to a purebred Lowline bull?  I think that lowlines originated from an angus herd so I didn't know if there were exceptions for angus cattle in general.  I'm of the mindset that they would be 1/2 blood lowlines....I just don't know for sure.

The Big Show / Self feeders
« on: July 13, 2010, 08:58:05 AM »
I'm getting ready to wean some bulls and am wanting to put them on a self feeder.  I will have 4 bulls to wean.  Any suggestions on self feeders?

The Big Show / Opinions on Angus Bull calf
« on: July 12, 2010, 08:22:26 AM »
Here is a Jan. 26 bullcalf 81lb. BW out of a first calf heifer.  He is a Gambles Royal Flush X TC Freedom.  He will be the heaviest critter ever weighed at weaning on our place(at least I think so).  Opinions good and bad are welcome.

The Big Show / Preferred frame score
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:47:16 PM »
I was out in the barn tonight kicking out heifers and was wishing one of my heifers was a little bit bigger.  Yesterday, out of curiosity, I took a hip height measurement and she was right at a 5.5 frame.  I then started to think how many good moderate females I've seen this summer and thought that I may not be that far off.

What frame score do you like?

The Big Show / Colorado TB?
« on: June 25, 2010, 08:25:19 PM »
Heard a rumor that Colorado is now classified as a TB state.    Don't know if anyone else has any info on this.  Angus junior nationals are in Colorado and I'm from Illinois.  Looks like a possible shorthorn replay.
