Finalized he deal yesterday to switch posesion, and turned him in with our cows. He looks pretty good for a 6 year old range bull. I still believe he's a more complete bull than his daddy!

Visitors welcome anytime!

The Big Show / I'm about ready to give away a calving ease bull!
« on: March 13, 2009, 10:32:28 AM »
Last night I checked the heifers, then went to a meeting. I was back within 2 hours, found a heifer trying to mother a dead calf. No sign of stress on cow or calf, except calf's head was turned under it's shoulder. This is the third (first calf) calf I've lost by similar reasons this year. Some that I have witnessed birthing, have gone from "first sign" to calf nursing in a half hour. I've never had a group of heifers so speedy. Sometimes I think a little more trouble translates into better percentages. If I didn't know better I'd swear they're crossed up with horses. Maybe  <cowboy>  Red  <cowboy>  could start a birthing class for first time mothers (heifers).

Iowa, if your out there, these are 21R calves!

The Big Show / Of Bibles and cellphones. (cattle trailer related).
« on: October 10, 2008, 06:31:39 AM »
Yesterday a gentleman and his granddaughter were turning into our driveway with their truck and trailer. Those of you that have been to our place know what a blind intersection it is, and the state just recently raised the 1920's style highway to 65 MPH. An oncoming couple on their way to watch their grandson's football game, riding a fancy fully dressed Harley broadsided the trailer. The accident claimed the life of the Grandmother. There was nothing we could do to save this woman's life, even though there was an EMT from the game convoy on the scene within seconds.  The lady's two sons and daughters' in law were unusually calm, I soon found out they were people of Faith.

Through all this one of the neighbor girls observed all the cell phones being used by the bystanders. later last night she made the comment. "I wonder how different this world would be if we treated our Bibles like cell phones?"
                                                                                              WOW!

The Big Show / Carcase yeilded 70%, with 19" loineye!
« on: August 17, 2007, 08:12:38 AM »
After responding to Knabe's thread on butchering, I thought I'd pass along this. In a Nebraska test recently a Shorty steer yielded over 70%, with a 19.1" loineye. He also topped the "carcass" rate of gain,(Not live).

Here's the disgrace! Carcass only graded USDA standard. When is the USDA going to scrape this antiquated system of "grade and yield", and come up with something for the 21st century?

I'm thinking T-L (tender-lean). I know these genetics, and their tenderness is phenomenal!

The Big Show / PHA! It may be over sooner than you thought.
« on: May 23, 2007, 09:21:57 AM »
Just got off the phone with Donna (with Agrigenomics). I'd been waiting for PHA results on Wymore. I'd asked to have him tested with the same DNA sample as the TH sent in couple years ago. This request was made very soon after the PHA test was made available. The results have been sitting there waiting on me for months. So, if anyone is waiting for PHA results you may want to call 217-762-9808, ask for Donna.

By the way, Wymore is officially TH\PHA FREE (clapping).
