The Big Show / dutch belted
« on: April 11, 2021, 02:11:16 PM »

saw a few bulls this breed at stud this weekend.

kinda cool.

one guy is trying to save the germplasm/breed.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy now lists Dutch Belted as on the critically rare breeds of livestock in the North America, with fewer than 200 registered cattle in the country. The breed in the U.S. is the only source of pure belted genetics in the world since the Lakenvelders in Holland suffered from much crossbreeding from 1950 to 1976. In fact breeders of Lakenvelders in Holland have turned to American Dutch Belted Breeders several times since then for semen from pure bulls.

The Big Show / chuteside
« on: June 14, 2020, 09:06:56 AM »
I lost track where someone mentioned chuteside in another post, so i thought i'd just make a dedicated thread.

this podcast is about Maine Anjou with guests from the Maine association.

i liked all the "judging" comments.

The Big Show / slick shows
« on: April 27, 2020, 09:49:40 PM »
our county is adding a slick show this year, and eliminating hair show next year, so slick only starting next year.

local semen rep/ai breeder, said bulls used are going to change from blacks because they just don't look as good slick compared to non-slick.

what are your thoughts?

The Big Show / large ranch for sale in california
« on: February 09, 2020, 03:46:20 PM »

california has set aside an emergency fund and is trying to twist things around to purchase it because it's an emergency to end private land ownership and beef production.

i don't think this qualifies as an emergency purchase, although every self-respecting environmentalist thinks it is.

personally, i think they should de-populate san francisco and sacramento.

The Big Show / gate latches
« on: November 17, 2019, 10:37:10 AM »
gate latch not pulled tight to help see how it works.

the smaller chain has a keeper on it in case the chain falls of the lever and it won't have to be re-threaded back through posts.

all gates on the place are like this.

ranch, >10k acres

all the water troughs are entirely fed by multiple spring sites you can see evidence of with trees in the background and other areas.

pressure exceeds 100psi and entire ranch is gravity fed. tanks periodically allowed to overflow to water trees.

ranchers are selling out after 50+ years. not sure who had it before them but phil stadtler may have had it, leased it. he was big time in this area. https://www.facebook.com/PhilStadtler/posts/2195039517402447

all the other ranches in the area use wells and are not even remotely as well cross fenced and watered.

all fencing is sheep fencing as the area was predominantly sheep country till that went away.

they run about 300 mother cows on the place. it obviously doesn't rain much there so they always kept a lot of feed in reserve.  they are too old now to irrigate some of the fields they had for calving, hay, and other crops. when water was "super plentiful", i.e., shallow, a lot of alfalfa was grown in the area till the water ran out, which also caused the river to run dry and be seasonal which it mostly has been since about 30-40 years ago so there are no steelhead anymore.

kind of a neat place.

The Big Show / Oversized switch plates.
« on: July 07, 2019, 03:26:22 PM »
Been looking for oversized heavy duty switch plates in the barn where I had to make the rough out glow a little big due to sheeting thickness.

They also have a lot of artistic covers for the house patterned after craftsman era and others. Not sure google can even use ai to find this place. All they do is link Home Depot, Lowes, ace etc.
