The Big Show / Dream Catcher
« on: August 31, 2011, 03:50:24 PM »
I was curious about what everyone's experience was with the simmental bull Dream Catcher.  I have a Simple Math/Friction heifer that is really cowy.  I was thinking of looking into the sexed heifer semen from him.  She is a bit smaller framed but is deep bodied with a lot of rib and shape to her.  She has done really good showing for us this year maybe the only thing I would like to change on her is give her a bit more leg bone.  I am just a few years in to starting a small club calf herd so any other suggestions are welcome.  I think this heifer has the potential to make a really good cow so with most easy calving bulls not typically throwing over powering calves I was thinking of breeding for a heifer.

The Big Show / Feed
« on: June 22, 2011, 05:36:52 AM »
My brother bought a year old breeding heifer that is on the small side, about 850 pounds.  His daughter is showing her at our county fair and right now he is feeding Jackpot Gold (Kalmbach)which is a steer maker feed.  I told him that he probably needs to switch her to the Jackpot Heifer mix and he said the guys he buys his feed from that he should keep using the steer maker.  I am not afraid to admit that I am not a feed expert so I am looking for some help.  What would you do?  Thanks!

The Big Show / Leg Hair
« on: June 07, 2011, 05:55:34 AM »
Just got our feeder calves about a week ago and everything is going pretty good.  We have an oustanding little breeding heifer that we are hoping is going to make a good cow.  She is a simple math out of a friction cow.  She has really good thick body hair but the hair on her legs is real thin and short.  We typically use the heck out of a rice root brush, the roto brush and when they have hair like this we apply maine and tail conditioner to their legs.  My question is, is there a better product to put on their legs to try and get some volume. We have about a month before the first open show and about 7 -8 weeks till our county fair.  Thanks for the help!

This is the first year that I have used the Estrotect patches and I was wondering once you see the patch that is the majority red do you breed it then or do you wait the 12 hours or so?  Thanks!

The Big Show / Maximus
« on: February 28, 2011, 08:28:28 PM »
What does he work well with?  I have a second calf who made who/simmy heifer that I was thinking of breeding him to.  The heifer is sound and in a pretty package.  Do the cows need to be really deep bodied or heavily muscled.  With this breeding I would be hoping for a heifer but what kind of bulls/steers does he throw. Would like some info since his semen is on the expensive side.  I almost bought a maximus heifer a couple years ago out of an angus that was absolutly beautiful but the momma was a nutt case so I didn't.  I have been curious about him ever since.   Thanks!

The Big Show / BC Classic 385-7

Was curious what everyone thought about him and if anyone has any experience using him.  I bought some sexed heifer semen from my COBA rep the last time he came and filled my tank.  Was thinking of using him on heifers and looks like he should make some good cows.  Thanks for the info.

The Big Show / Grizzly Calves
« on: February 01, 2011, 08:34:38 AM »
i was wondering what everyone's opinion of his calves are.  I have a My Turn/Foreplay heifer I was thinking about breeding to him this spring.  She is very powerful and compact (should of been a steer) and was looking for a bull to stretch her out and give her calf a little more depth.  She is thick and has a lot of eye apeal.  Is a bit straight on her back legs but he looks like he has plenty of set to him.  Any pics or thoughts would be aprriciated.  Thanks!

The Big Show / Heifer Acting Wierd
« on: December 31, 2010, 04:45:23 PM »
I have a first calf heifer that is not due till end of January but noticed today that she is not eating but all she wants to do is lick on the everything.  Whether it is the gates, woven wire fence, wood post it doesn't matter.  They have had 12% mineral tubs in the lot but ran out the other day and waiting for the feed store to get more in.  I have been hand feeding them hay so they wouldn't get too fat to calve and I even tried giving her some grain and she just picked at it a little bit and then would rather chew and lick on the feed trough rather than eat.  Any ideas what it could be or is it just some signs of her possibly calving early.  Thanks!

The Big Show / Sales
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:51:20 PM »
This spring we should have our first calf crop in which we plan on selling all of our calves.  We should have 5 maybe 6 six available and was wondering what everyone thinks is the fairest way to sell them.  On a first come first serve basis and we set a price or set up a sale and set minimum bids.  We have friends that do it both ways and we hear complaints about both.  We are afraid that if we do it on a first come first serve basis then someone will get mad thinking that they should of had first pick and if we do a sale then we hear poeple complain that the prices are just getting ran up on them.  So any help or ideas is appriciated.  Thanks!
