The Big Show / Intimidator
« on: February 04, 2020, 06:08:37 PM »
A neighbor was cleaning out his tank and gave me some Shorthorn semen on Intimidator.  Numbers on the pink straw are 129 and SS 151.  There is no registration number.  Maybe it was collected about June of 1995.  Does anyone remember Intimidator?  Bulls during this time period often carried too much birth weight.

Does anyone have the results from this year's Star Search sale at Cates?  Doc, were you there?

The Big Show / Always be humble and kind/NC or not?
« on: January 07, 2017, 08:08:02 AM »
Maybe the song writer will allow us to borrow the suggestion that in 2017 we "always be humble and kind" on steerplanet.  Lately the discussion has been civil, but I have not read all the topics.  If we disagree, that is not a problem, and, yet, let's observe the common courtesies.  Everyone brings something to the table, so let's respect them and learn from their input.

I also look at another message board and they too, are challenged to use good manners and not be quick to criticize.  We have had some outstanding members stop posting, who might once again post, if everyone would be tolerant of others' ideas.  On the other hand, let's all have a "thick hide" (or thick skin) and not be overly sensitive if somebody differs in opinion....

Merry Christmas! Enjoy what you have and those around you.

This is borrowed from Possum on another message board.

The Big Show / PM PS & PMSY on Shorty pedigree
« on: May 11, 2014, 03:12:17 PM »
On Shorthorn pedigrees there are now sometimes PM, PS, or PMSY ahead of the name of the animal.  Look up Enticer,  Rodeo Drive, or Dividend.  What do those mean?  Is there an explanation for them at ASA online?

The Big Show / JJC Wild Side--DSC
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:03:50 PM »
JJC Wild Side *x4045349 is DSC.  I'll post more DS testing results in a few days.  Our other DSC is a bull calf we'd hoped to retain by Wild Side.  Study his pedigree--is there another possible source besides Duke?

The Big Show / 'Twas the day before Christmas....
« on: December 24, 2013, 07:14:42 AM »
Here in SW Indiana we are thankful for the Reason for the season!  Our daughter has decent weather to drive back home today from NW Iowa.  Dad used to say that having the family together was the only gift he needed.  When our children were growing up, our tradition was to cut a cedar tree on the farm--bringing in the tree is a great memory.

As much as we enjoy the cows (was there really an ox in the stable or is that just a tradition?), this time of year is another opportunity to get our priorities straight.  Many cousins will visit during this once-a-year event.  I look forward to playing Dirty Santa with a basketball autographed by Cody Zeller--do you think that might get stolen?  Too much food will help us appreciate our simplicity and routine after the holidays.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!

The Big Show / ASA Secretary
« on: July 20, 2008, 07:36:24 PM »
"As of July 18, Greg Ruhle is no longer the executive secretary of the American Shorthorn Association."  This is part of an email from an ASA director.  Anyone know anything about his departure?

The Big Show / flies
« on: October 16, 2007, 09:02:49 PM »
During p.m. pasture check today I saw a 9 day old heifer calf swinging her tail rapidly.  She had flies (maggots) in the area under the tail.  The insecticide spray can took care of them.

It seems late to have fly problems.  We quit July calving partly to avoid screw worms.  What is the latest you have seen this?  Here in SW Indiana we have run our air conditioners almost every day since school started--hot, dry weather.

We also have more horn flies than usual.  So far we have tried 4 different insecticides.  The next step is StandGuard--have any of you used that?

The Big Show / cows calving early in the heat
« on: August 24, 2007, 06:09:39 AM »
In SW Indiana, producers say cows are calving  up to 3 weeks early this fall.  Also that sows are farrowing early.  Yesterday a neighbor had his pond watering system for 30 cows run dry.  Our forecast is for 100 again today.

The Big Show / frame score
« on: July 25, 2007, 07:00:17 AM »
Is anyone else not comfortable with the smaller frame size in bulls?  There are several people who are enthused about bulls with mature hip heights of 52".  I understand using a "tool bull" A.I to add rib, fleshing ability, etc.  The concern  is having cows that are several inches taller than the bull in the pasture.

One cattleman once told me to breed cows that are 54-56" and I would never be wrong--that was considered middle of the road.  Now the pendulum has swung so far that I have heard of smaller bulls falling off the cows.  One leading breeder had a bull that he said he would use if the bull could reach his cows.  Does anyone remember "pitting cows" so the bull could consummate the marriage?

There is a saying that one extreme follows another in the weather.  Will the type swing back toward taller cattle even if it is in the next decade?  The last time we had 48" cows, the promoters said to use their taller bulls to get the cows up out of the mud.

If you breed a frame 3 bull to a frame 7 cow, how consistent will the offspring breed?

What frame score bulls do you like and what is the frame score of your cows?

The Big Show / Worst Fair Memories
« on: June 27, 2007, 11:52:39 AM »
What is the worst experience you have had at a fair?

How about getting up in the wee hours to take white Shorthorn calves to sheep barn to Holstein nurse cow on show day?

Some of you can top that easily.  Have at it!
