This is our young bull calf. I just wanted to share a few pics. I really don't know what my long term plans with him are. ie... promote him, sell him, or just enjoy having a nice herd bull. I have been trying to concentrate on my shorthorn breeding program, but this guy has always intrigued me. Thoughts?

The Big Show / Shorthorn Bulls of the Past
« on: August 23, 2012, 03:24:55 PM »
I am trying to put together a list of Shorthorn bulls that are:

1.TH & PHA Free
2. Outcross to Double Stuff, Trump, and Proud Jazz Genetic lines
3. Born before 2004 (Before we knew who was TH & PHA Carriers)
4. Semen still available today for a reasonable price ($100/Unit or less)
5. Bulls that are known to produce show steers or daughters that will produce show steers.

The idea behind this is to find new genetics to use that we may have over looked from the past. These bull may be better than what is available today but were not being used as much because TH & PHA Carriers were making more sell-able cattle.
I am posting the start of the list, please feel free the add more as you can.

My List as follows: Double Leader, Gizmo, Vortec, Steer Maker, Surf, Tequila, and Wide Side

The Big Show / Pasture Fertilization
« on: May 25, 2012, 09:15:38 PM »
I was wanting to know what the recommendations are for pasture fertilization. For example how much 9-23-30 would i need to apply per acre, what time of year is best, and does it help to put it on half in spring and half in fall. Please be very specific and detailed. Also, please give facts not opinions. Just needing to gather info!!!

Thanks, dhs

I saw this shorthorn bull and really liked him. The video looks much better than the pic. What's everyone else think? Video at Paulsen's website: www.paulsencattle.com and go to the upcoming sales.

The Big Show / Our first Fringe calf!!
« on: March 12, 2010, 09:22:32 PM »
We got our first Fringe calf, a heifer out of a Sin City shorthorn cow. We estimate her birth weight between 65 and 70lbs. We got a pic of her at about 12 hours old, it isn't the best but I just wanted to post it. We named her Iris, it seems to fit her.

The Big Show / Breech Births
« on: March 12, 2009, 10:28:58 PM »
I had my first bad day of calving season today. Had a first calf heifer calve breech. the calf only weighed around 80lbs, but the cord had snapped before I could get it out. I only bring to topic up cause about 90 to 95% of our death loss the past few years has come do to breech birth, it just seem almost impossible to get one out alive in this situation. My question to all is what causes breech births and what do I need to do better when I have one. Thanks for any advice, dhs.
