The Big Show / Who Adds The Most Bone??? Name The Bull.
« on: June 18, 2010, 04:18:59 PM »
Ok, so in EVERYONES opinion, what club calf bull OR any purebred bull adds the absolute MOST bone to their progeny while keeping from making a sound cows calf into a not so sound calf. Lets hear your votes and opinions!!! I didnt post a poll because I dont know what everyone will choose. Thanks again!!! :)

The Big Show / Warrant(Heat Wave Son)
« on: June 18, 2010, 08:45:36 AM »
I was wondering what everyone thought of Warrant? What are your experiences with him if you've used him? Calving troubles? How do the calves look? How do they mature? What types of cows does he seem to work on? How have his calves been doing in the showring? How do the females preform in the pasture? Or if you've raised his calves, how do they feed? Gain good? Thanks!!!

Edit: Has anyone seen him in person? If so, whats your opinion? Link to ad: http://www.theshowcircuit.com/SireDirectory/2010/Warrant.pdf

The Big Show / My First Shorthorn!!!!
« on: June 16, 2010, 06:08:03 PM »
Well yesterday we got our first shorthorn as a cow/calf pair. We bought them from a friend that breeds some good cows that throw some great calves. The cow is sired by ALM Sabotage and out of a Laprairie sired cow. The heifer calf at her side is a Tiger Woods. We bought to use the dam as a recip this year and if that doesn't work out we'll AI her. Does anyone know much about the genetics on the cow TH and PHA concerning? I know Sabotage is TH free, but didnt know about PHA. This is my first step into the Shorthorns, so if anyone can tell me more about the cows genetics with the TH and PHA, and what works well on them if we end up AI'ing her. Thanks in advance!!!!

The Big Show / 2010 Jasper County Preview Show Pictures???
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:43:18 AM »
Does anyone know where I can find the pictures taken of the breed champions and reserves? The photographer was a member of the FFA program and I didnt know if they had a website to visit where they would post the pics or not. They wanted pics of all the breed champs and reserves(they made it very clear), so I'm sure they will have them, I just dont know where to look. Thanks in advance!

Well our Hannibal donor just calved last week to Dirty Harry(a full sib to the heifer we sold last year.) We bred her back this way because we liked the first calf so much and wanted to stay with calving ease so did Dirty Harry again. She had a bull calf this time and it by far in my opinion is already better than lasts years calf, so I cant wait to see how he turns out. Both of her calves were 90lbs and just slid out of her like a hot knife through butter. She had the calf, stood up almost immediately, started licking it, ten minutes later the little guy was up and already MILKING!!! The calf is soo healthy and complete I couldnt believe it. It was just like last time she calved. She has  a huge pelvic area and I'm pretty sure she could handle a 110-120 lb calf easy. Ok enough bragging from me, I was just really proud. Now for those of you who have been kind enough to stay with me through my bragging: What would you breed her too?

Cows Pros: very long bodied                                                      Cows Cons: Finer Boned
                   huge topped                                                                                Straighter Boned
super clean fronted                                                                     Could be a touch easier moving but thats being super picky.
                   Fairly thick                                                                                    NEEDS THICKER HAIR
Easy moving                                                                                NEEDS MORE FRONT EXTENSION(LONGER NECK)
Great straight lines                                                                     NEEDS MORE BONE FOR SURE.
Pretty Powerful                                                                            Smaller Framed in terms of heighth. Last calf finished about 1190. Would like to see calves finish higher weights.
Could use more rear quarter for sure.

Cows Pedigree:  Hannibal x JDJ Ice House(Sired by Iceman).

Bulls I was thinking of in no particular order: Bojo
                                                                      My Turn
Heat Wave (I already have Heat Wave eggs out of her and if put them in I will take this option off, but I dont have the recips yet.)

She passes her bone, length, front, thickness, and lines onto her offspring. (Judging by the past two calves).

I know some of you might say why not Dirty Harry again, but I'm looking to go for the gold and no bashing Dirty Harry, but he's not going to throw a $10000, Grand Champ steer out of her.

The Big Show / Who'll Add More Bone?
« on: May 05, 2010, 05:00:57 PM »
Who do you think will add more bone and thickness on a Hannibal sired cow? My Turn or Sunseeker? But while still keeping the calf sound. The cow is really sound and structurally correct. Thanks!!!

If you choose other please list the bull you think will work the best for adding bone and thickness. Thanks!!!

The Big Show / Embryo/Breeding Question (Please Respond!!!) :)
« on: May 02, 2010, 02:25:22 PM »
I've got a breeding situation this year and would like everyones' opinion on what would be most cost effective. I have a heifer who just calved a while back, we really like the calf and have already had interest on him. I ended up with two straws of Monopoly to breed with and I think I she'd click with Monopoly(It'd be a similar breeding to T. Woods and Boardwalk). My question to you is, should I flush her to Monopoly with both straws and put an egg back in her? Or just breed her to Monopoly and let her calve naturally, see if the calf is any good, and if she's worth flushing? Thanks in advance :) If it wasnt so expensive for Monopoly right now and flushing costs the answer would be obvious, but I'm stuck here...:(

The Big Show / Can you read the reviews of the breeder links?
« on: May 01, 2010, 10:50:43 AM »
If so how do you do it? Thanks!!!! It says some links have reviews and I was wondering if you can see the review?

The Big Show / Who Makes a Good Creep Feed?
« on: April 21, 2010, 12:21:44 PM »
I was wondering what everyone went with for creep feed (brand wise). We're using ADM, but I think I wanna step it up a notch and get something a little more appealing to the calves and has more value to the feed. Any suggestions? Also if you could include a link, I"d appreciate that. Thanks!!!
