The Big Show / Red Angus steer shows
« on: March 23, 2019, 05:15:09 PM »
Is there any demand for Red Angus steers at all. Do they have like a appendix cross bred class at the Junior National? I have heard that.......like at houston or something similar....they don't want them looking like they are th influenced....or have freaky bone. Is that accurate.....I wonder out loud. I always wondered about a Durham Red steer class at the Shorthorn Nationals.......I assume that that would be a dead duck.

The Big Show / solar fence chargers
« on: March 23, 2019, 04:59:21 PM »
Anybody have thoughts on solar fence chargers. I have used mainly Gallager. I have one pasture with no 110 access. I've used S20, s50 which I don't think they make any more. They have a S100 for sale now that I am considering. I have also used a B60 I think. Do you get better charge with a 12 volt battery and then charge them up all the time with like the B60. I think that there is also a S200 that is like a 600 dollar charger. Any thoughts.....brands etc

The Big Show / Direct marketing of Shorthorn beef
« on: February 17, 2019, 08:13:51 AM »
I thought that maybe this needed its own thread. I wondered if there needed to be more discussion on this. Does the breed differentiate itself with tenderness of carcass? Is there a business model for it. If the breed is mostly comprised of small herds.....what would happen if each herd sold a locker beef every year?

The Big Show / List of triple clean Shorthorn bulls
« on: February 06, 2019, 08:10:01 AM »
I wondered if it might be cool to have a list of triple clean AI bulls listed here. It would just save a lot of research for everybody. TH,PHA, and DS clean.

The Big Show / Using an 18 month old bull
« on: February 03, 2019, 09:07:06 AM »
There has been a movement of people selling 18 month old bulls instead of yearlings. The theory is that they can cover more females. But.....cattle loose some teeth at 18 months. Do these bulls get real thin breeding cows because of teeth problems. I bought such a bull who got very thin and I was a little disapointed. But he had 35 cows. I got to wondering if it is a teeth deal.

The Big Show / Kansas Shorthorn assn annual meeting 2019
« on: January 26, 2019, 07:30:07 PM »
Just got back from the meeting. Had a good turnout at Wilson Kansas. Some new good blood on the board. The Kansas Shorthorn Board will revamp the web site. Marty's daughter is in charge of it and she is smart. Nancy Heter is on the national board.....gave a report....she is sharp. Very positive meeting. Kevin Gibler has gone above and beyond........trying to bring things together. Wilson, Ks is a cool little town. Keith and Nadine Lauer there. They are both older than Moses. Registrations and memberships are all up at a national level. I will try and shut the hell up. I did spend 6 years on the board. My wife the Supreme Commander did 6 years on board. According the the Shorthorn country our herd had 6 performance dams.....or whatever they are this year. I will post no more on this board as I am a problem. John Musgrave spoke things about the Vietnam war that people didn't want to hear. I will post no more on steerplanet. It's best for everybody.

The Big Show / Genetic defects
« on: December 20, 2018, 11:24:18 AM »
If I understand it right........there are 10 registered Angus dna tested as dwarf carriers. So there is apparently a test for that. I wondered about Herfords? Would the same test work on Herfords? Or do they do a different gene test or do they even test. I always thought that there would still be some dwarfism genes floating around. And then I always wondered if th or pha might show up in a Herford or Angus or Simmental on down the line because of unscrupulous breeding matings. Any thoughts?

The Big Show / The bomber claims to be 50% Seminole
« on: October 26, 2018, 07:09:20 PM »
I'm sorry.......but am I the only one that thinks that this is hillarious? Now......what does CNN do? Make fun of the bomber for claiming to be half Seminole....in order for their narrative to work? As the fat chubby guy on the movie Animal House said.........this is gonna be GREAT!

The Big Show / Applegate atv feeder
« on: October 18, 2018, 02:45:27 PM »
Anybody had one of these. It probably wouldn't work for a wetter show feed but what about cracked corn or cake. 3,000$. Wondered how they held up? They might save a hopital bill for this old man. Thanks in advance.

The Big Show / Black shorthorns
« on: August 10, 2018, 10:06:52 AM »
I got to thinking about this lately. If a 20 year old got into a project like this. I would think in 20 years when they turned 40. They could get their. Start out with 20 Shorthorn cows.........and breed them to the best Angus bulls. Out of those 20 half blood black calves. Keep back one bull calf....or more......and breed them to the females.......even if they were half sibs. Continue on down the road......repeat. Try different angus bulls on the original cows......whatever you need to ........start raising you Shorthorn % eventually.........in 20 years.....seems like you could really accomplish something.
