Goat/Lamb Chat / First Lamb
« on: May 28, 2017, 03:22:01 PM »
My daughter decided she would like to show a market lamb at our county fair in September. I showed lambs 30+ years ago but I'm sure a lot has changed. What are some basics we need to know and what is a good feeding strategy?

The Big Show / Safe wormer to use on steers?
« on: July 23, 2015, 08:21:16 PM »
Our kids have 2 steers for county fair in 50 days. Both have a very nice hair coat at this time and getting better every day. Both steers weighed 1325 a week ago (yes we are holding them some now) My question is they were wormed in December and April with injectable wormer.  Dot hey need wormed again? If so what do we use?  Last year we wormed 40 days from fair and one of the steers shucked his entire hair coat the week before fair.  Not sure if it was a coincidence or not but we are leery to take a chance again.  Thanks for any and all help!!!

The Big Show / Nervous steer
« on: January 05, 2014, 09:13:50 AM »
We have a monopoly steer that we can catch, tie, wash, blow out and walk fine - until he sees something new whether it's a car going down the road, a cat, a leaf....the minute he sees anything new he tenses up, gets bug eyed and tries to get away.  Any suggestions on what we can do to get him over this?

The Big Show / Cool room routines
« on: July 21, 2012, 06:51:50 AM »
I know this has probably been asked and answered here before but I'm having a tough time finding it....what is everyone's daily routines for hair care with a cool rom?  This is our first summer with a cool room and I just want to be sure we are doing everything correct.  If it gets below 70 we turn the steer out at night.  In the am my daughter rinses him for at least 20 min then brushes him and puts him away wet.  Later on in the evening she rinses him again for 20 plus min. And then blows him dry and Kleen sheens him brushes him and blows him some more.  Our cooler has been staying 56-60 consistently.  Anything else she should do or anything she should change?  We have 50 days until our county fair.  Thanks for any and all help!

The Big Show / spastic paresis question?
« on: April 16, 2012, 10:11:47 AM »
I've been looking for any info on this defect - is there any testing currently available?  In our rather small cow herd (10-12 cows) seems like we end up with 1 calf every other year or every few years that this crops up in - the first 2 calves (back 8 or 9 years ago) we shipped the cow when she had 2 calves in a row, had a heifer calf 3 years ago that we had to put down at 4 mo. of age,  had a calf last year that that appeared to have a mild version of this, and now this year we have 1 calf who is straight on his back legs who I am concerned may develop this as he gets older.  At least in our cows there has been no link for bloodlines where this is cropping up (other than our cows are predominantly Maine and Shorthorn bred cows).  Just wondering if there is a test out there for this yet?

The Big Show / Putting finish on a steer
« on: June 20, 2011, 09:19:39 AM »
What products are good for putting finish and cover on a steer?  Our daugther's steer weighs 1170 with 101 days to county weigh in.  He has the bone and frame to carry 1350-1400# easy.  Right now he is getting 25 lbs./day of a 12% grower show feed (Hanby farms), along with Hide and Hair.  He is currently gaining 3 lbs. a day on 25 lbs. feed and looking for more.

The Big Show / Feed questions
« on: April 29, 2010, 10:51:32 AM »
This is our daughter's second year showing a steer project in 4-h (she is 10).  Last year's steer would eat and eat and then eat some more - weighed in at our county fair at 1400 lbs.  This year's steer is a picky eater at best (they would usually only eat 3/4 of their feed each feeding) - after looking on here we have fed him probois for 4 feedings and they are now licking the feed bunk clean (24 lbs. grain fed to 2 steers 2x a day - 12 lbs. of a show feed similar to ADM and 12 lbs. of our own grind and  mix which consists of shelled corn, oats, SBM, liquid molasses and minerals mainly).  I am wondering if cooked barley or corn will help him out - 2 weeks ago he weighed 855 and was 48 3/4 inch hip height at an April show.  Our fair is middle of September.  He is growing hair like a maniac with rinsing and blowing dry 5 times a week (he gets clipped every 2 -3 weeks to keep it under control) and is under 2 fans in the semi-dark.  He is in with a companion calf who is her carcass animal.  Also, how long should we feed the probios for?  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!!!
