Swine Chat / Vaccinations and such
« on: August 25, 2011, 04:30:45 PM »
Like I have posted on here befroe, we are new to the pig showing. Have a few questions; how often do you worm your pigs (what kind does everybody use), is there any other vaccines that pigs need or any other suggetions? Also what kind of bedding does everybody think is better sand or shavings? We have concrete pens.

Also it was suggested to buy two pigs so, is it ok to keep them in the same pen until I start feeding them by weight and then just seperate them, but where they can still see each other?

The Big Show / Bull Question
« on: August 13, 2011, 09:11:45 AM »
I have a angus cross cow that I need to add some depth of body and spring of rib too. She is excellent fronted, and has adequate muscling (never hurt to have more though). What bull has everyody had luck with while looking for these needs?

I am looking for a pig diagram. One that somebody could learn the different parts of a hog for judging/showing purposes. I am not looking for just the basic diagram, wanting a in-depth one that covers everything from head to tail.

thanks in advance

Swine Chat / New Adventure
« on: May 04, 2011, 09:06:09 PM »
My daughter came home the other day and asked if she could show a pig. She has been showing steers for 2 years and she said she wants to do the whole pig thing as well. So i agreed! The problem is I have no feeding experience.......so should i start the pig on free choice and if so how long does he stay on free choice or should i weigh the feed every feeding? Also everybody tells me i need to buy 2 pigs bc they do better, is this a must in yalls opinion? Any other helpful info would be greatly appriated as well.

Oh by the way we do not have a county agent that knows how to feed out a pig. My uncle is helping as much as possible but he lives 10 hrs away so kind of hard.

« on: March 17, 2011, 11:02:39 AM »
At what age do y'all band/cut y'alls bull calfs that you plan on selling/showing as steers? The reason I ask is I have always waited till they are 5 or so months old, but a guy told me I needed to be waiting until they are atleast 7 months............
