Swine Chat / Nephews second set fair pigs...thoughts?
« on: July 07, 2013, 02:30:34 PM »
Here is year two in our county fair level attempts at Hogs.
first the big one... he weighed 290 today with 12 days to go... yikes.  Any ideas on what to do feed wise would be helpful.  My Purina guy advised us to put him on Powerfill which we are starting tomorrow when I go get it.  Any other comments will be welcomed.  I know basically nothing about raising pigs...thanks

The Big Show / You might be a beef producer if...
« on: July 01, 2013, 02:03:08 PM »
Hello fellow planet-eers I need some help.  I have been approached by the local cattlemens association to make them shirts to sell at the fair.  The want a sort of top ten list on the back but they want ones that are geared toward just the beef farmer/producer side of the business not the show aspect.  I have about 6 but I am stuck...help me!!!

I will get the ball rolling...

***If you write more checks to feed stores than grocery stores...

***Family bonding is building fence and making hay...

come on... I know you folks have some good ones... help me out!

THANKS IN ADVANCE :) :) :) :) :)

The Big Show / Who to breed these girls to? Suggestions please.
« on: February 11, 2013, 05:36:14 AM »
The heifer that the nephew is showing this year...she is an I-80 out of a Sin City (the black one)
and a past 4H project cow, the red shortie.
He wants to make his own steer for 4H or a quality heifer he can show.  Thanks in advance.

The Big Show / How is sale order determined at your county fair?
« on: August 01, 2012, 03:16:11 PM »
I am curious to see the responses to this.  Our county fair was just held and I was shocked to see the sale order not determined by quality, rather by math.  So my question: Is this normal?  Does the judge place and determine the sale order in your county?  To be clear, of course the champions were first but after that it was the class winners, then the second places and so on, from lightest to heaviest and there were some obvious inconstancies.  The fair my boys participate in is not the one my sister and I attended while in 4H and in that county the judge determined the sale order so if you were number 6 in the sale order, you had the sixth highest quality steer (at least on that day and whith that judge) and so on.  Maybe that practice is not normal and that is why I am asking.  Thanks in advance.

And they did this in every species...my youngest nephew had the class winner in the lightest class of hogs and he sold first after the champions.  There were plenty of more finished hogs that should have been in front of him.  This is another reason I am asking.  Thanks

Swine Chat / Nephews first set fair pigs...thoughts?
« on: July 15, 2012, 02:11:16 PM »
this is our first year raising pigs for the fair.  We aren't even sure of what we are doing so any help will be soooo appreciated.  this pig-Lefty weighs 220 and we go to the fair in a week.  We know they are smaller than they should be weight wise but with no electric during the 10 hottest days of the year set us back.  Any ideas or thoughts?

The Big Show / Overhead fan arm
« on: June 08, 2012, 11:35:29 AM »
My dad is insisting on building (instead of buying) the upright fan stand to hold the fans in the barn at Jr. Nationals.  Can anyone help me out with the dimensions (as in how long is the arm that holds the fans and how tall)?  And a further question...do folks normally attach theirs to their stall display or is it totally independant and does it have a 'foot'?  Any help will be appreciated.  Might keep a fight down in the shop this evening... (argue)

and does anybody have opinions on the ideal material?  Since he is going to his friends fab shop to make it-stainless, aluminium and steel is pretty available!

The Big Show / Nephews cheap fair steer...thoughts?
« on: June 05, 2012, 10:05:20 AM »
here is our effort for the local county fair...we intentionally don't spend a bunch on his steers but like to get them to their full potiental.  What do ya think?

The Big Show / Settle an argument...who has to open the gate?
« on: June 03, 2012, 05:48:29 PM »
We just had this discussion at the barn and I told the offending party I would put it out to the professionals on the interweb...

and as a side note I will add that the passenger thought that eating a brownie was enough of an excuse to get out of opening the gate...so wrong...so, so wrong... <cowboy>

I thought a non-political, fun thread was in order...

Swine Chat / PVC Waterer
« on: May 13, 2012, 09:59:03 PM »
Hello:) we are new to the club pig scene, it's the younger nephews first go at it and I was hoping the pros on the Pig Chat side of SP could help me out...who has a kickin plan for making one of the PVC waterers. Running water, I know is better but not possible where our pigs are housed so scolding me on that won't help...but I could use some got advice on how to make one of these. Thanks in advance:)
And the reason I need this rather than a pan...one of the pigs (our gilts are together nose to nose but seperated in the pen) anyways-one of them does fine with the pan system-and the other well...she works on dumping it the minute you put water in it so that isn't going to get it so my solution until the running water gets put in the new barn is this PVC waterer...so thanks in advance for your help!!

The Big Show / Looking for recommendations for scales
« on: April 22, 2012, 11:59:30 AM »
Hello:) I am In the market to buy a set of scales for my nephews 4H projects and I would like some reccomendations. I like the bar type not the crate type so we can use it for both the calves and pigs,  what features are handy? What brand do you like? Thanks in advance :)

The Big Show / winning fill
« on: April 17, 2012, 10:11:48 PM »
Has anyone used this as a complete feed? It claims to be one and our steer prefers it to his feed. He is getting about 1/5 of his ration now as winning fill and I am debating upping it because he eats it so well but was concerned if he would still gain.

The Big Show / Ringworm remedy
« on: April 06, 2012, 06:28:16 AM »
I need suggestions to get rid of ringworm on the nephews show heifer. I have been hearing Fluvicin (labels for horses) in paste form but all I can find is a crystal form. Any other suggestions? Or has anyone use the crystal form and how did you administer it? Thanks in advance

The Big Show / Rep-Gel Capsules...thoughts?
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:21:56 PM »
Does anybody have any experience and/or feedback on a product call Rep-Gel Capsules?  Supposed to help with flexibility.  My nephews show heifer needs to be more flexible out of her hind legs.  That seems to be the major flaw judges point out (and she needs to be more feminine-she is a steer in a skirt)  We bought some of these, but wanted to get some feedback before we use them.  Thanks in advance
I threw on a picture of her...this is a VERY early picture..right when we first got her back in August.  She has really grown but I have no decent outdoor shots of her right at the moment.
