The Big Show / New shorthorn herd bull
« on: April 07, 2014, 01:27:44 PM »
We are really excited about our latest purchase. The top picture is of the bull we just bought from Hatfield Shorthorns & Clydesdales. He is Hatfield General 6Z a 2 year old son of one of our current herdbulls Hatfield Governor 17X. Governor has done a great job of improving our herd with his heifers. I've liked General since he was a young calf and can't wait to see what he will do for us!

The Big Show / son's new angus heifer
« on: January 24, 2014, 02:35:04 PM »
Last year my son bought a nice bred angus cow from a herd dispersal. It was his first purchase to start his own herd. He got a nice lookin'  WAF Zorzal bull calf off of her. This fall she came in open after having many chances with the bull and AI. He was crushed. I asked him what he wanted to do and after a couple of days he said, he wanted to sell her, and by another bred heifer or cow. So we went shopping. After getting some help from a friend who sent us in the right direction, we ended up buying this bred heifer at a sale. She is due to calf end of February.

The Big Show / New steers/heifers for the 4-H year
« on: November 28, 2013, 10:39:02 PM »
Another year, another set of steers for the kids. This year we have a nephew and a family friend picking up a steer from our place as well. That means, there will be 3 shorthorn cross steers and one angus x shorthorn steer going to the show. My boys are also taking shorthorn cross heifers to the show. Should be a busy and fun year for everyone! The red one is going to the family friend and the black one is sired by a black angus bull. The picture is terrible and I hope to get a better one soon. The bottom pic is one of the heifers that my son is taking. The steer in the avatar is a 1/2 brother to this heifer.

Our bulls have been breeding for about 3 weeks now. Just thought I would share a picture of our 3 year old shorthorn Hatfield Governor 17X. I just love this guy. Can't wait to see what his heifers will do as cows!

The Big Show / New calves on the ground
« on: March 01, 2013, 06:11:21 PM »
We started calving in earnest on Feb 15th. It's been going really well. So far we have 18 heifer calves and 5 bull calves. Plus our son got his first calf last night and had a WAF Zorzal 321U bull calf. 92 lbs unassisted. The calves are a little heavier this year (due to the cold?) but the cows are calving super fast, the calves are standing up within minutes and are sucking just like that. I hope it keeps up like this! At this time they still have a lot of cuteness factor so I thought I'd share a few.  The first two are heifers  sired by our shorthorn bull. The 3rd is a heifer calf out of our black angus bull.

The Big Show / black angus bull question
« on: January 18, 2013, 08:28:45 AM »
Our 11 year old son saved up his 4-H steer money over the last number of years and this past fall was able to purchase his first purebred black angus cow.   (clapping)
She is bred to calve March 1st to WAF Zorzal 321U. He is looking at the semen catalogues trying to decide what to breed her to next... Last night he came home from school and thought Cole Creek Cedar Ridge 1V might be a good choice. From what we can find on the internet it's pretty positive. We looked at a few Youtube videos and noticed he has a bit too much set to his rear legs. Does anyone have opinion on this bull? Or suggestions of a bull that you think is good? He's looking for a cow maker with a bit of calving ease (not to extreme).

The Big Show / New 4-H steers (updated with show results)
« on: December 01, 2012, 11:15:24 AM »
Its that time of year again for us. The kids have to have their steers picked by December 7th when we have Weigh Day. Our boys pick from what we have, we don't buy our 4-H projects. My niece picked a steer from our pen again as well, so there are 3 steers going to the fair in July. The pictures aren't great and the steers aren't showy but they are thick. Would love to hear thoughts and opinions.  :)   Care to see if you can place them in the right order?  ;)

The Big Show / Thank you SP
« on: November 26, 2012, 03:55:10 PM »
Elm Creek 4-H Beef Club would like to thank all the people on SP who volunteered their services for our clubs scavenger hunt at Canadian Western Agribition.  (clapping)  The kids really enjoyed meeting you all and getting your "autograph" was a pretty big deal. Lots of talk on the bus about a Herford bull named Youtube! Would also like to thank all the people who spent time with the kids teaching the tricks of the trade. A lot of tips were given on how to judge and we really appreciate you sharing your wisdom with them! You know who you are... :)  It was a unanimous vote that we have to go again in 2 years ! THANK YOU! <beer>  On a side note, I spent a lot of time in the Shorthorn barn and really liked what I saw. Hope you share some of your show string pictures soon!!  <party>  <party>  <party>

The Big Show / Any good material for new 4-H members
« on: September 25, 2012, 10:18:41 PM »
Well, our 4-H club is starting a new project year next week. 100 years in Canada  <party> Anyway, we have a bunch of very young, very new, kids joiniing. There knowledge of cattle is limited at best. Any recommendations for good resources we can use to teach them the basics about choosing, feeding, anatomy, etc. of a beef animal? Thanks in advance.

The Big Show / commercial shorthorns 6-7 months old pics
« on: August 29, 2012, 09:15:40 PM »
In March I posted a few pics of some of our calves and I thought I'd give y'all an update. I am still really pleased with the way they are progressing. First pic, the heifer calf up front is a Hatfield Governor out  of a first calf heifer, the calf behind her is a Hatfield Snowman steer out of an 9 year old cow. These calves are all showing really good growth.

The Big Show / Roast Beef- non cattle related
« on: April 22, 2012, 11:05:31 AM »
Every time I go to a bull sale where they have beef on the bun it tastes awesome. But when I try to cook it at home it doesn't taste nearly as good. I'm thinkin' some of you out there can cook up a mean tastin' roast and I was wondering if you would share your ( or your wife's ) recipe. I know this is a cattle forum but who better to ask how to cook beef than the people who grow it?  ;D   I'm looking for any kind of roast recipe; roast beef sandwich, pot roast, slow cooker roast, roast on the BBQ, whatever you're good at cooking. I have a husband, 4 boys and a baby girl ( she doesn't eat yet) , so hearty roast beef goes a long way on our dinner table. Thanks for your help  :)
