The Big Show / Feasibility of Collecting My Own Bull
« on: December 04, 2019, 11:29:25 AM »
Hello All,

We have what my dad considers to be the best bull we've ever had. He's now almost 6 yrs old (Jan '14 calf) and it's time to get rid of him due to having daughters etc. I want to have him collected. Question 1: Is it worth the trouble?

About the bull: Bought from a relative (registered Angus breeder local to North East MO) [Bull is AAA 17956082] and just planned to use on heifers. Turned out to be an all-around stud. His calves off of heifers were outgrowing calves off our more expensive bulls we bought for cow keeping. We showed his steers at county and state fairs. They had natural muscle and excelled in the rate of gain and carcass competitions, and did pretty well in the show (still can't compete with club calves). We ended up keeping some daughters that are now pretty good cows themselves even though we never bought him for this purpose or used him on the main herd they just were standouts from young cows. Only pulled 1 calf (he was backwards) using him since 2015. Approximately 25 females / yr, first 3 years of service only heifers & 2 yr olds.

Question 2: In your experience will people buy semen on an unknown bull like this for $12/straw?. It's cheap but I like him I think others would too. I question that we will ever go through all these straws but I need to get quite a few to make this economical, hence I want to sell a few on the cheap. Thanks guys,

Agreed. I've had several MAB calves & even out of a nutty cow they're tame and fun to work with although some soo tame they're lazy & hard to walk.

The Big Show / Walks Alone / BIM Sons

Hello all,

Are there any popular Walks Alone / BIM Sons that can provide the power and appeal without the attitude? I've used and had great success with I-Believe. I'm trying to come up with a couple more black bulls to use this year.

*Angus or Balancer commercial cattle for dams. Trying to create a showy, county fair winning calf that is still capable of growing.
*We care more about actual stoutness and power than hair as we don't really have the time to invest in the great hair.

I've had ones that were tough like that a couple years in a row. Sometimes I gave up and other times I was able to really buckle down and break them. I would try and keep her on a rope for a few days and the only way she gets feed or water during this period is when you take her to it. I always sat there and pet them during. If they fought I would just re-tie and come back in an hour, eventually, they would tire, and after a few days, they understand who's boss and that you're not out to hurt them. I've also had several that this failed on and I just gave up, my brother was between 10 and 12 at these times, so it sometimes wasn't worth the risk but it may be worth a try.
Good Luck

The Big Show / Bull Live Birth Weight
« on: June 06, 2018, 09:23:30 PM »
How many of these AI bulls (club calf or PB) have true birthweights put down? It seems when comparing posted BW of these bulls (expecting calves to come out this way) to what I end up with in calves I come out a little high, also we don't have large cows or a continental base, current cow herd is mostly 1200-1350# and >50% Angus except for a few PB Charolais from a few years ago (grow like crazy) and a few PB Angus I just bought. Is it commonplace for these numbers to be tweaked? I don't know everything about this side of the business except that these numbers are an honor system.

What spurred this question: Have never raised a bull myself but would like to leave some really good AI calves intact this year or future. I think our management practices and genetics have improved enough to do so.

The Big Show / Places to Sell Cattle (Other than Classifieds here)
« on: August 07, 2017, 11:27:49 AM »
What other websites do you use to sell show calves aside from here on Steer Planet? I don't have enough to make a sale out of (2 halter broken heifers and 2 or 3 unbroken steers) so I want to be able to post and let people just contact me, additionally, I'm going off to college at the end of the week so I will only be able to come back on weekends so my need to sell is increasing (lol)

I'm thinking MAB (had good results so far) or Monopoly for taller, lower volume cows. Fu Man Chu or One and Only for more capacious cows.

Who is the big deal bull these days? Siring show steers out of the top of my herd angus influenced cows. Can use Red or Black or chromed up calves, I like MAB. No roans, shorthorns, smokes, or chars.I know I could search but wanted some more current info.

The Big Show / Re: Clipping vs Fitting Fees

On the steers I sell I do it for free. On calves for my friends I just ask for a little food  (lol). And for show me select heifers where I just do the head and tail I get close to $10 / head and I like to get about $50 for clipping and $25 for fitting. I am not a professional lol but I am also still in high school so time to learn.
