I was not there, but heard that they were all very satisfied with how it went.  I bought the Venture heifer out of Major Leroy's mother.

Here are Lot 10's two 2010 daughters.  The lighter colored one is her natural calf by The grove Kookaburra, the other is an ET daughter by Alta Cedar Ultimate 130K.  They are both January calves.

The Ontario Fall Classic shorthorn Sale is October 23.  The catalog is online at www.ontarioshorthorns.com.  Usually has good quality at very reasonable prices.

Our cow is Lot 10.  She is a WHR Sonny daughter born in 2005.  She is due in late Feb or early March to our herd bull SS Red Pride 836.  She was shown successfully as a heifer and went on to produce some nice calves as a cow.  She produced 10 good eggs in her only flush.  I am President of the Ontario Shorthorn Association and wanted to offer one of our best for the club sale.

I was pretty sure the 8th picture was Kookaburra.  Here is a picture of one of my Kookaburra's.  I was really hoping he would have darkened the cow down a bit, but Andy visited the herd last year and I showed him this heifer's mother and he said Kookaburra could possibly throw a light roan calf.  Kookaburra's grandmother or sister to the dam or something was light roan.  I guess he was right.  The other two calves are red with just a few white spots.

Is the one bull Kookaburra?  I had three heifer calves by him this year.  They are pretty good calves.  The only draw back was that all three have a bit more white on them than their mothers

Maybe there are enough mistakes that we can say the results of this test are not 100% accurate.  What if rather than double test a bull for accuracy, you looked at the status of the bull and his parents.  In this case Sonny is not a carrier so the bull's dam must be.  If you are breeding carrier cows and want to be really sure you are using a TH free bull, why not use a tested negative bull with tested TH free parents?  That would remove some of the rare human risk factor.

This same thing happened with a dairy sale my brother helped manage last spring.  They thought their guy was the final bidder on the embryos but the auctioneer had the bid from someone else.  They took full responsibility for the embryos not meeting the sellers floor price and the sale management made up the difference.  It was a modest floor price so it was not a lot of money, and both seller and buyer left happy.

I too would be interested in the pedigree.   I didn't study the pictures really hard this morning.  My first impression was that he was a fairly thick calf and in decent condition. He had a nice round quarter from the side, lots of depth of body, and some hip from behind.  For everyone that is reading this post for the first time now, with no pictures, they were not that bad.  There have been a lot worse animals pictured on here.  My first impression was that he seemed like an interesting calf.  There have been pictures on here that I have hit the back arrow so fast that I couldn't even guarantee they had feet, let alone toed out.  I thought it was an honest picture and gave a good idea of what the calf was like.  If he had the right pedigree I would drive to see this calf.  He would probably be as good or likely better than his picture.  I would rather have it that way than the other.   Any ways they were not the greatest pictures in the world, and nobody will send you thousands of dollars for him based on photos alone, but they were not awful either and were better than no picture at all.   That was not a calf you should be ashamed of.  Bravo for actually putting a picture of one of your calves out there for everyone to see.  There are a lot on here that are not that brave.
PS in my opinion, when I think outcross  to the "hot" shorthorn sires, I think he should have no Trump, Doublestuff, maybe no Maine blood at all.

The Shorthorn results link is missing.  Going to http://www.royalfair.org/files/Shorthorn.pdf  should work.

The Big Show / Hair Samples for TH Testing
« on: November 08, 2009, 08:11:31 AM »
Has anyone sent hair samples to Igenity for TH testing?   I sent 6 samples and only recieved results on 2.  Some people said it is hard to test for it with hair.  They said I must have sent poor samples, but they were as good as any hair samples I had sent away for anything else.  One of the samples was for a bull I also had tested for PHA and did one of their genetic profiles on.  They were able to do the PHA test and the genetic profile but not the TH test.  Just wondering if anyone else had any experience with it.  Thanks.

The Big Show / Re: TH Status of ALM Tequila

I was not trying to imply anything, just passing on what they said.  The bull was born almost 14 years ago.  In Canada, we were told Tequila was running out of semen long before the whole TH thing was a big deal.  I do not even know if Manchesters marketed him or just bred him.  I am sure that there are other bulls in the same situation that were legitamately not tested.

I emailed Manchester's, they said he was not tested, but they had not heard of any defect calves by him.

Could someone tell me the TH and PHA status of ALM Tequila?  The list on the Shorthorn Association website has nothing beside his name.  Thanks.
