The Big Show / Re: Weaning calves early?
« on: May 29, 2013, 01:52:29 PM »
last year I weaned off four calves right at the 1st of June. The calves were shorthorn or shorthorn plus and they got all their needs (hay, creep feed, water etc) and they have done great. Sold two and the other two are back in the herd and the four cows bred back AI no problem and all had calves this year. I am doing it again this year. I liked it because the calves were utilizing the creep feed and hay efficiently and I was able to get my cows out to pasture quicker with the herd bull.

The Big Show / Re: Appendix

They are really the same thing just Shorthorn Plus relpaced Appendix as the newer more modern term a few years back. They just have to be 50 % Shorthorn to be registered as Shorthorn Plus and it doesn`t matter if the Shorthorn blood comes from the dam or the sire they would just have to be registered with the Shorthorn association.

there is one other variation, shorthorn-plus can be any colour, as long as they fit the pedigree stipulations, appendix have to be traditional shorty colour patterns, same papers tho. colour pattern only applies to show classifications

I do not believe this is true. I have always shown appendix/shorthorn plus cattle and in 2004 I showed a steer that was a who made who x warrior and was solid black and he showed as an Appendix steer. I have never heard of having to have traditional shorthorn color pattern to be registered

The Big Show / Re: animal science universities
« on: June 02, 2012, 09:34:14 PM »
I am entering my senior year at Western Illinois University majoring in Animal Science. At WIU there are several on hands experiences dealing with livestock. we have an active swine department where there are alot of on hands experience and we also have a pig sale. Also there is the bull test we have and sale every March. Now i had the opportunity to take classes with both Dr. Egnell and Dr. Nimrick who are both highly knowledgable in Animal Science but both have retired. You still have Mark Hoge there that you will learn alot from.
Im not saying you should go to WIU, there were just some that may have not liked or were saying it wasnt worth their time. Animal Science is not my only major. I am double majoring in Animal Science and Law Enforcement with a minor in Ag economics.
If i do choose to continue my masters i would choose K-State.

My bottom line is that Animal Science is not a waste of time major. There is alot to do in that field. Many jobs that Trans Ova offer tend to require Animal Science degrees and with your focus on genetics, Trans Ova would be one of my top companies i would be looking at in pursueing a job in after college.

Also, if that is your passion, go with it. too many times you see people who down road have regrets because they didnt like the field they were going into so if this is what you want to do go for it!

The Big Show / Re: CE white shorthorn

An angus breeder I work for bred a few of his cows to capiche and the calves he had were blue roan but they were your dark blue roans. we have always had good luck getting blues with Kool as well.
A white shorthorn bull that we used a couple years ago was CLB Notorious. never bred him to black cows but the calves we had out of our shorthorn cows were roan and those cows were mostly red so he could possibly throw some blues.

I just think this bull is pretty cool made and marked up wise. I think he would be a fun bull to use and see what you can get out of him but pretty interesting bull

The Big Show / Re: Should sale catalogs still be mailed out?

I always like a hard copy sale catalog mailed to me but I think having an online version of it can always be helpful

This is a Kool x Ace of Diamonds. Born 2-18-12. Still a bull but will most likely make him a steer

Thanks! we are pretty pleased with him. I will have more pics of him on the classifieds for sale in a couple weeks after i get home from college and get a chance to get him clipped and better pics of him. He is for sale

The pics of the unstoppables at Sinclairs I saw a couple weeks ago and was really imprssed with the hair, bone, soundness and how consistent the set of unstoppable calves they had there.

I was just fliiping through the post so sorry if someone already posted it but Salute is now deceased and the semen I believe is starting to be limited or atleast thats kind of what i thought the whole ad in the newer show circiut was saying. I believe his semen is still at $50. Someone mentioned using Ace of Diamonds but they can be huge as well. Another person mentioned Fringe and that can be a way to go. I have seen a fair share of calves out of Fringe that all had enough belly to them also Damn Proud will add belly to them as well. Personally if you like Salute I think it will be fine to use him.

The Big Show / Re: New Shorthorn reg. papers
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:28:33 PM »
Yeah myself included I dont like the new layout of the papers. I understand if they wanted to put more info on it but it wasnt like the old papers were two sided? I really couldnt tell the difference and like Doc was saying it is kind of a pain when fliiping through your papers especially since my plus is dual registered lol
