The Big Show / Simmental advice
« on: June 14, 2013, 01:18:20 PM »
Im trying to produce some quality replacements that can be registered and possibly be bred back clubby down the road. I would just like some advice on what type of cows these bulls match up well with. I have mostly com angus cows but a few have some clubby background. Bulls I have and will be using Dream On, 3C Macho, and Fat Butt.  I also have access to get some Felt Next Big Thing and zckk custom built (full brother to chopper).  I have read searched and read older posts but any suggestions would be appreciated. What about the cow that pictured?

The Big Show / Calving redemption
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:50:49 PM »
Early march I heifer had a stillborn calf at midnight, next afternoon a heifer had a calf in the yard that got stepped on and died, and that evening a heifer that delivered a live calf but she has mastitis and is only milking out of two quaters. Rough start, but my cows that are AI-ed starting calving this week and So far having great luck and by far best calves I have ever had. Went out this morning at 5:30 and saw a calf laying dead pretty close to a cow and come to realize that she had another one by her side so I was happy she had one live one. As I went up to the other calf I come to find out it was still barely breathing, cold and wet.  Got it in the truck, dried it off, got it some colostrum and saved the calf. The cow obviously isn't taking the calf but it's doing good and to top it both off the twins are really nice 67lb blaze faced (Fat Butt) heifers!!!  It made my easter, along with having another good looking Fat Butt bull calf this afternoon.

The Big Show / Re: Replacements Heifers from these Angus cows

I may be behind the times but I got some Macho and DO to use this year on commercial angus cows to get replacements.  DO obviously has been heavily used but there must be a reason. I would also look at Felt Next big thing and also Rave Defiant owned by Felt.  I have a Defiant heifer out of a DO cow that I think is gonna make great cow and have seen other defiant daughters at Felts and they look pretty good. He is only a half blood.

The Big Show / Re: Best Clean Bull for Steers?

I am not for sure if he is 1/4 maine but how about one & only.  I haven't raised any yet but have some due in a month. I am hoping for the same thing as you. The potential of a good steer if not hopefully a some nice heifers that has enough maternal influence from the dam's side.  Sorry if he isn't 1/4 maine to meet the poll criteria?

The Big Show / Re: portable cattle scales
« on: December 28, 2012, 09:38:23 AM »
Per reading other posts on here about scales I decided to buy some load bar scales from palletscales.net this fall.  They were less exspensive than others I looked at. Free shipping, the custormer service was good, and they shipped promptly.  I am really happy with them so far. I built a platform for them that the vets chute can sit on and weighed the calves when we worked them this fall.

The Big Show / How common is a false heat?
« on: September 27, 2012, 08:32:46 AM »
I searched this topic but was wondering how common a false heat is during pregnancy?  We combined cows from 3 pastures last week on Thursday and yesterday I had two of the better cows (typical) seem to be in heat. They both came from the same pasture. Two of the bulls were following them around and tring to jump them for over a day but the two cows wouldn't stand at all.  I found it interesting that the bull they were with in the pasture all summer wasn't chasing them though. He was semen tested and bred all the cows he was with last year. I had recoreded one of them being bull bred on June 28 and the other July 1.   We are working the calves next friday so I will have these two preg-checked at that time but was wondering if it's possible this was a false heat in part to increased hormones when combing the cattle back into one group?   Any thoughts appreciated

The Big Show / Re: June calves?
« on: August 03, 2012, 10:39:58 AM »

we'd sell every male calf on the place for reasonable money- just to get them in someone, anyone's hands, instead of market.  Don't care who much the middle man made on them...

I feel the same way. I just want to help someone who can't afford the high priced calves the oppurtunity to show a calf and not have to sell them at the sale barn come december. I am going to get pics of my calves soon and post or email pics to those down south. I remember when I was younger having and ag teacher and a couple students from TX stop and buy a calf. They were here in Nebraska picking up one or two calves from local sales and then headin back with a trailer load. I haven't been trying to sell any show calves for a few years and just getting back into it and I would like to get calves into someones hands and build connections.

The Big Show / June calves?

I have a couple nice late calves that weren't born til  mid June and will be too young for most fairs here in the midwest and was wondering if they fit for any shows and if so what part of the country? Also, how would you go about selling to them, ex. find a trader in that area or ???  Thanks

The Big Show / Re: Choice of Bulls.
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:16:24 PM »
I think both of those bulls would be choices. I had used Sunseeker several times on commercial cows and never had a bad calf. He isn't as popular as others but we got some really good heifers and the steers always grew great. Sold some heifers and kept a few and also kept one for a bull out of an angus cow and he is throwing really low bw, nice calves.  I also never had a single calving problem with Sunseeker.

The Big Show / Re: Walks Alone vs BIM
« on: June 27, 2012, 05:05:51 PM »
I had two WA this year out of a WMW cow and WMW granddaughter and it didn't click. The one out of the WMW cow is getting better but the other not so much.  Have another calf that is spose to be a fat butt but I am having him DNA tested to see if the semen got messed up cause he is a stud out of a plainer angus cow.I really like my other fat butt calves  but this one looks clubby so I just want to make sure cause if he isn't a fb then he would be out of WA.  My abs guy couldn't get BIM, it was on backorder, I was looking forward to trying him. I did use WA again except this time on the plainer angus/commercial cows. I think he is too good to not use again but it just didn't work on my those two this year.

Sorry, I should've put that on the original post.  He is a a bull I  raised out of Carnac and a Sim/Ang cow  These are some of the first calves out of him.  I have been pleased with them but obviously prolly a little biased so wanted to see what other thought.
