What are some of the boars that PPL have booked up for this year's breeding season? Went through 4K Farm's boars last night. Standout boars for siring the winning kind of x-breds IMO were Hillbilly Bone, Bad to The Bone, Red Neck,(new boar),Big Motor, 54-1,54-5, 88-6, Hot Topic, & Super Beast. Great PB Yorks that'll produce sows IMO are Sound System & Strutt. A PB Hamp boar that'll change hogs and make sows is Pure Pipe. One of the best Hamp boars that I've come across in a long time.

We're using Money Shot and Easy Solution from A-Cut-Above Sires in York NE, Jason Hershfeld.  Started the gilts on matrix Friday.  Have to see how it goes for our rookie pig breeding mission!

How long are you going to have them on Matrix & how are you giving it to them? Are you taking them off 7 days B4 breeding? I'm helping a neighbor boy with a couple of Bring it on Gilts. I think that he is using 4K's 54-1 boar on one and whatever they can get him for the other gilt.

Ours are on Matrix for 14 days.  they will "theoretically" come into heat 4 to 9 days later, hopefully some time when the semen gets here.  They are getting 6.8 cc per head per day in one dose.  I got some dinner rolls off the day old shelf and just inject the matrix in them with a syringe and needle and give one to each gilt.  Old show pigs love treats so it works pretty good.

Good luck!

We are planning on using Head On and Price is Right from Showtime Sires.
Like the looks of Yeti at PSSS.

We are using Matrix also.  Research shows more consistant heat if you give a
shot of PG 600 24 hrs after stopping Matrix, most important for gilts.  They
should come in heat 5 days after stopping Matrix.

My brother-in-law had a litter of PSSS Yeti's a couple of weeks ago.  He said they look fantastic!  They will go to Duncan in November with them.

Good info on injecting the buns with the Matrix. There are some that have troubles getting a constant dosage to the gilts daily.
Anyone make it to Austin, Mn. this week, if so what did you learn or see?

Ron, having troubles heat detecting gilts. How are/did you get along with the Matrix/PG-600 program? Thanks, Brent

Still have a couple days of matrix left Brent.  They all tell me it's easy but I am a little worried with $500 worth of semen with a short shelf life coming on a set day.
They should be more vocal, Swollen vulva and stand still when you put pressure on their back.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Kind of a tough situation. Only 2 gilts and they have been taken to the fair, brought back home then moved to a new home on the 24th of August, hoping that they would cycle naturally on the 27th/28th, then breed them on the 18th of Sept.. No teaser boar or other hogs around. We did breed one of the 2 this morning and are trying to be patient with the other one. We are breeding 18 & 30 hours after onset of standing heat. Bred the first gilt to 4K Farms boar 54-1 a son of Hillbilly Bone. If we catch the next one, we will breed her to a PB Hamp. boar that they just bought from Cains out of Bring It On named Pure Pipe.
Can you buy Matrix anywhere in less than a liter containers? That's the smallest amount that I have found it in. Thanks Ron. Brent

We finish the matrix tomorrow (Thursday) so hopefully we will be breeding the middle of next week.  Will let you know how it goes.

As far as getting Matrix, luckily our vets son has two pigs to breed also and another of his clients whom we all friends with has three to breed also.  So he just split a bottle up between all of us.  I think in PSS's catalog it mentions to contact them about getting smaller doses of Matrix.

Good luck and keep us posted on progress!

Looks like the other gilt will cycle today sometime, I hope. How long will you let fresh semen set B4 you feel that you need to get fresh semen? this has been here for 7 days stored @ 60 degrees and rocked 2 times/day.

We stopped Matrix the 19th, PG on the 20th (PM for both).  Had first one stand AM of the 25th, 2nd stood tonight PM 26th.
They both locked up great, even layed their ears back.  Seems like the program worked great for us.  We don't have a teaser or anything, so I was suprised that they came into heat as well as they did.

PSSS will sell less than a bottle of Matrix.

We try not to use semen over 5 days old.

We bred our first gilt Am and PM on day six after Matrix.  Still waiting on the second one. Hope she shows tonight or in the morning so we can still go to the Mindemann Farms World Class Angus Sale in Wisconsin this weekend!!

I know that it could be different for some gilts, but how long are you guys waiting to service gilts after 1st observed standing heat? We bred @ 18 & 30 hours post 1st observed standing heat. I use to breed @ 12 & 24 hours after & if they were still standing 12 hours after that,I would service them again, but I was collecting my own boars in those days. I have also been told that there is data stating that servicing 3 times can cause smaller litter size.

I went to Aksarben and watched the hog show. I was intrigued enough about a couple of pigs and had to ask what they were out of. One was out of a Cain's Farm boar named On Star & the other was out of a High Points boar named Toxic 38-4. Arron Cain showed the one Div champ & a Warren boy from Mills county Iowa showed the other Div champ.
