Josh, one bull the rest heifers. He is keeping a few heifers and maybe the bull calf. Apparently TG Complete likes to throw heifers so far. Go figure. I wanted bulls out of him for someone to finish. Oh well always next year! Im sure more then one bull calf will be born.

Truth, like ol Forest Gump says ...................." I just felt like running. So I did"

AJ, he does not have Durham red papers but is registered AR. I am not familiar with the durham red registration process because I don't have any other red angus influence. Not knowing what all is involved I would definitely be willing to get him some papers that way if it would make a difference. Do you know what I would need to do? I think it would be a good idea in order to market him for that use.

I'm not for sure , but I think part of the process you had to record BW,WW & YW. I think there is something else, also.

Doc, we do have those numbers and dates, thanks to Trevor Grey Cattle Company. So hopefully that is all we would need but not sure.

He is registered as a 3/4 blood shorthorn. No Durham Red. Whats the point really if the assoc did away with it. Am I wrong in this. To be a Durham Red you must submit much more than bw, ww, and yw DOC. I didnt see the point honestly. Maybe I am misinformed about the DR deal being pushed aside. If it makes a difference to someone, I will do all I can to make him a DR. Look at his pedigree, he is a 3/4 shorthorn with a shot of Cherokee Canyon. Say what you will about Cher Can but the Missy Ruth cow and the Clementines are behind him as well. I pray he breeds as good as he looked on minimum inputs.

Actuall... bw . ww. yw. and scrotal measurements for a DR bull to get papered. I guess your right TGC about one thing ASA did take a big ol dump on the program. However ... one thing I have always said about DR vs Shortplus .... there is a "pedigree" you can look at and for the folks that looked at this deal seriously from the beginning ..... that's what made it a selling point over the SH +?? But hay if you want a SH + paper just take your sh bull and breed it to the neighbor's goat.....  report nothing but  you'll still get a paper  ;) ??

I have some 3-4 shortie 1-4 Red angus females I would think he would work great on. I'm not sure the Durham Red will succeed like I thought it would. They need to be defect tested. Supposedly they are to be shorthorn-red angus blood only(then you get into the appendix deal as well.)  Looks like to me he could do a great deal of good.

AJ, thanks for the interest. I do know that SEK has about 100 units there in Galesburg now. I do have a scrotal measurement at two years of age but not sure if he had one as a yearling. It was 37.5 at GLSS. I was looking into getting some genetic defect testing done from Igenity until I figured out they don't deal with the parentage side of things with the ASA. So now I will probably get some testing done with Pfizer here really soon. Just getting into hay season and getting busy!

At a year he had a 35.5 scrotal and was 48 inches tall. Right under a 5 frame. I thought I included that when I sent the papers in. That would be my bad.

aj, I think he would be genetic defect free by pedigree. I have never used a carrier bull or cow. I avoided that stuff like the plague. Cherokee Canyon's sire is a OS carrier but Cher Can tested free.  As far as the shorty side, he should be fine. I would like to see you give him a try. Cross him on some Govt Mule daughters down the road :) <beer>

Thanks for that info on the genetic defect OS. I was looking all over the Red Angus site looking for what defects I should have Complete tested for. Glad to hear that he is clean on that one. Any other suggestions for defect tests would be welcomed. We will send out the hair sample here soon.

Durham Reds have to be TH and PHA tested, or be free by parentage to get papers along with BW, WW, YW turned in.  That gets you a gold Durham Red paper.

Update on Complete calves! We have had our first two heifers in the last two days. Both unassisted out of black crossbred Angus cows. First one was approximately 75 lbs. at birth and the second approximately 85 lbs. Both got up and nursed on their own. The first calf was jumping around like a rodeo at only a half hour old! Never seen vigor quite like that. I am more than thrilled with their quality too. Many more coming shortly!

Also, Complete was tested TH, PHA, OS, and MA free.

Two Complete heifers less than a week old. Calves started one week ago and there have been 8 calves hit the ground in 7 days. All unassisted, all black out of black cows. Coming easy and vigorous.
