FORT WORTH — This year’s Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo reached a record high in attendance, drawing an estimated 956,000 visitors, officials said Wednesday.

It was 15,000 more than the 2004 show and broke the record of 953,000 set in 2002. The 2002 show ran 23 days, and the 2006 show ran 24.

The Stock Show’s livestock division had a record number of entries, nearly 25,000 from 40 states and six other countries, officials said.

“We had unusually good weather this year, and our overall attendance fluctuates with the weather,” said Stock Show president and general manager Bob Watt. “For 24 days, the weather was very good.”

The Show hosted 19 livestock sales, setting a record high in receipts at $5,976,000, officials said.

This year’s grand champion steer, named Cool, sold for a record $160,000, kicking off a Sale of Champions that raised $2.168 million. Cool, a 1,316-pound black European crossbred exhibited by Whitney Holcomb, 16, of Lindale in East Texas, was bought by a father-daughter pair from XTO Energy and the Gunsmoke Grill in Fort Worth.
