My question is, how much money does the owner of these popular Angus bulls make on the bulls in their lifetime?  (I'm saying Angus because of the potential number of units of semen that can be sold).  Is 1.5 million a ridiculous figure or can someone make that back (and then some)?

Odds are slim he makes all of  that money back unless he turns out to be the next Final Answer and produces marketable semen for 14 years. Most of that is a tax write off for Herbster. But I can honestly say I've never seen so much buzz about a bull's price.  Good or bad, it's hard to buy that kind of publicity. Name recognition alone will go a long way to earning that money back.

I don’t follow Angus.  Could someone explain the 1,107 lb weaning weight?  5lbs/day until weaning?

at some level, this is interesting.

one could envision weaning a calf, and finishing it 3 months later.

would be more interesting if one knew the feed efficiency from weaning to yearling.

but on center pivot irrigated alfalfa or similar, probably hard to know.

calves would be interesting to follow.

Schaffs bulls are known for their performance and 1100 weaning and 1600 yearling would make the EPDs which some people base their breeding decisions on will be high. The bull will probably never see a show ring and sounds like they just bought 80% semen rights.I saw the results from ICA bull test in Iowa and there were a few bulls over 5#ADG while on test. This is more of a show  forum and the real world is about producing the most quality beef economically in the least amount of time.A lot of times these bulls get syndicated with only members able to use it.

Letter from Herbster said that SAV had taken orders for 5,000 straws of semen before the sale and then a bunch more orders since the sale. They were saying that the orders would be filled as entered on the list. They did say that they had plenty of semen on his sire "President" that they own also.

The 1.5 million sale price would get peoples attention and the +439# over breed average plus the top 1% in some of the EPDs is impressing His picture wouldn't sell any semen .Herbster have an interest in his sire so know the potential earnings. If I read correctly there were several full and maternal brothers in the sale There have been some  bulls such as Lonestar,First Class and Style that have  sired show ring profile but not the extreme performance that many base their breeding program on .How many times have you seen a steer at local fair that gained over 4# a day and had the top carcass based on ultra sound before the show, not much hair, stand toward the bottom of his class to the champion steer that had a great profile 3in hair, small loin, gained 2.2# per day and not fat enough to grade.Cattle based on EPD  alone aren't the answer . You need balanced traits that allow cattle to reproduce and optimize performance in the environment they are raised in.
