The # of stars correlates to your total number of posts. 

Regarding Karma...

When someone posts, under their name you can click the Positive or Negative link to add a positive comment or negative comment regarding the post they just made.  The more positive, the higher the karma and obviously negative brings your karma down.  It doesn't get you any frequent flyer miles and it won't move you to the front of the line to the grocery store, but it is a neat way to give someone a thumbs up to a post.
