If you add too many categories, that's as bad as having to click to 2nd and 3rd pages.

I strongly suggest you keep them simple - maybe as simple as Bulls/Females/Steers/Equipment

Agreed, always remember K.I.S.S.

Agreed....... Simple

Cattle For Sale- could always create a sub category here. Heifers, Steers, etc.
Semen/ Embryo's
Equipment
Vehicles
Other

This should cover it.

I was thinking something along the lines of breaking the cattle up into two or maybe four categories - one being show prospects, the other being breeding stock, and possibly splitting each of those by what's for sale now and what's in an upcoming sale (of any kind).  Then semen/embryos, equipment, trucks/trailers and other should cover it.  I like the idea of making location mandatory for classified posting as well - IMO, it's just common courtesy.

On edit - Or semen/embryo's could go with breeding stock, and  then equipment, trucks/trailers and everything else could be grouped together, if you wanted to keep the categories to a minimum...

agree with OH breeder however there is not the many ads for vehicles, equiptment, etc. so you may be able to to group them into one, like a miscellaneous category or something.

I have been hesitant to change format of the forums because most feedback that i received is that if ain't broke, don't fix it.

However, I have been several complaints about there being too many classifieds.  Essentially everyday there about 60 classifieds that are either New or Replied to, which seems to bury a recent classifieds way down into pages 2,3,4,5.

So the solution would be to break up the classifieds into categories.  What category structure would you like to see?

Possible Categories:

Upcoming Private Treaty Sales
Trucks/Trailers
Equipment & Supplies
Semen and Embryos
Cattle for Sale

Is Cattle for Sale generic enough?    I don't really want to break it down by breeds.

First Vote on whether you would be in favor and then let me know what you think the best category structure would be.
I like these categories best, especially separating the upcoming sales from cattle for sale.

I think I got a pretty good foothold on what we need.  The only problem lies in the implementation.

I think the best scenario is a new forum for classifieds, broken down into categories.  Then I will take the last week worth of ads and transfer them over.  Anything older than that, you will need to pm to get transferred.  I will then cut off the original classifieds to all new posting, but allow replies.  We will wean off it for a month or so, before it will eventually be archived and will not allow any new replies or postings on the old classifieds.

Jason, thank you for looking at this topic more, and opening up the discussion to the SP members. Everyone has given good advise, and the comments seem to be right in line with the discussions we had.  My categories would be the following after reading the posts

Upcoming Sales
Steers/heifers
Bulls/cows
trucks/trailers/equipment

I think this would be enough, if you are going to break it up.

I would like to do that, but I am afraid it would make entire too many categories.  Honestly, if we could get people to post their location in the thread title, we would be in business.  It something that I could probably modify.

It looks like their is no need to continue the vote, the majority has spoken.  I will mess around with the categories tonight.

I don't mind the classifieds being all grouped together but for Heavens sake people.... anything "for sale" or "I am having an auction", needs to be in the CLASSIFIED section!!!  I am also not a fan of the side stepping "what does everyone think of XYZ calves that are for sale till next Saturday." way of posting things for sale. Geesh, doesn't "classified" mean anything to anyone?

That would be great if people put location in the title.

what about those two columns on the main classified page before the subject?????...not really sure what purpose they serve, but couldnt one or both be changed to state...people could enter abbreviated state titles there....make it mandatory, a field that has to be filled out to post the classified... ;D

went back and looked, one is called the message icon...why not have the states listed there...really, hardly anyone uses that function and its not really beneficial...who cares if you have a smiley out from your thread?....location would be so much more useful...just my two cents...
