I think that I would pick the 114 calf. He may not be the prettiest calf ever but the way it looks he has a lot more natural thickness to him compared to the 106 calf

is your show a slick shear or a hair show. That could make a big difference on your choice.

after thinking about it, i need to know something - when is the fat show? i think the 114 calf is stouter and all that jazz but when he fills out is he going to get big and dopey? i might rather take the 106 calf now, looks like he's got plenty to grow into and maintain some appearance as a fat.

The correct choice for the show steer would be steer 106. The reasons are quite clear once one looks at them. The steer is like any other animal and is judged especially these days from the ground up. Therefore you look at the structural correctness of the two and 114 begins to worry us as he becomes straighter in his design and begins to worry us when we look at the design of his hip. Additionally we look at the extension through the front end and flex that 106 has in his pastern and joints and we begin to see a more correct steer that gives us more look and balance throughout. In terms of natural thickness I would give the edge to 114, however he appears to be earlier maturing and quicker in his kind, making us worry about how expressive he will be, especially for our slick shows and at what weight he will finish at. 106 is however not without fault as he is harder in his make up and shallower throughout. There will definitely be some feeding challenges with getting enough depth of flank in this steer, however go with the complete steer 106 that will have the natural look, eye appeal, and structural correctness vs. the heavier fronted, soggy, straighter made steer in 114 . If you have any questions just email me at [email protected] . Hope I helped.
