What does everyone do with your pairs when they are old enough that they dont need to be in the calving barn. Do you put them right to pasture or do u keep them close in barns untill the grass is growing.  What do people use for cover for the calves, a calf shed or timbers or wind breaks

Personally I try to calve my cows out on winter pasture as much as possible. I use lots of bedding in sheltered areas such as along the wind break fence as a well as the tree lines and draws. I find calves stay healthier the sooner they get out into more open areas. That being said with wind chills of -29c the last few nights I've kept a few cows up by the barn. I tend to calve on an area close eto an acre per cow have had much better calf health since making this change.when we used to calve in the barn they went into turn out around a day old and back to big pasture 3-7days. Good luck.
