Been looking at some of the bred heifers they have in the sale wondered if anyone knew much about past sales and what kind of money the breds sold for the 2008 results are posted by lot number but that doesnt tell me what sold... Interested in maybe picking up a few bred heifers, but thats a 4 hour drive and dont want to drive that far just to find out they all sell out of the price range i am looking at.. Thanks

Matt

search the archives on here or breedersworld or one of the boards they always put a complete sale report up each year.  They may also have them on their website for the sale as well.

I know that most sell around 4,000 and up. If your lucky you could find one for 3,000 that is an okay heifer but wouldn't be a winner.

I have also seen quite a few of good quality go for $1200-$1500.  The opens usually average 3000-4000.  You should be able to find some deals, especially this year

The 1200-1500 is kinda what im wanting to hear in a bred... The thing that scares me if any of you have looked at the sale catalog at all, some of the nicer ones in my mind are bred to bulls that are not going to be calving ease.. I am use to calving ease using my lowline bull on most all first calf heifers.. Should I be worried about calving issues?! not having to pull calves before..

Never had any calving problems from heifers coming out of this sale. There are not many breds in your price range at this sale. These are not "sale barn" cattle. If you truly want good genetics, spend the extra money and buy one this year and next year buy another. It makes no sense whatsoever to buy two or three mediocre heifers for 1200 1500 when you can spend the same amount, buy only one,and be years ahead of the game. Just do your home work,it can be done, and in a couple years you"ll thank yourself for doing it that way. There is,most of the time, a big difference in quality between 1200 and 3000. There is a reason some will only bring 1200.

We've had good luck out of this sale in all price ranges. A $700 open heifer that made a good cow.
a $2000 bred heifer that raised a champion Chi steer at our state fair with her third calf and a $4200 bred heifer
that paid for herself in a years time. Go to the sale and sort through them, I'm sure you can find something that
you like and are willing to pay for.

I am wanting to go this year. Its got a lot of hype and I'd like to see what its all about. Sale catalog looks like they have a tremendous set.

Reinken: Think about it this way it costs just as much to feed an average bred heifer as is does of one that is donor quality. We've found you'll make more money when you have four or five donors cows than when you have you have 10 or 15 avg cows. You dont have money in feed, maintaining your pasture, or management. Just my experience though.
