What is your opinions on sexed semen? And is there a distributor? It was an idea that was brought to my attention not to long ago.

Another question...I was told there are some places that you can rent recip cows for a breeding season, is this true, and if so who does it?

Thanks! I am really liking this site alot! I have learned quite a bit of info!

ABS, Accelerated Genetics and I think Genex each has bulls that have sexed semen available. Not all bulls are available.
Your best bet is to call whoever you deal with and ask about the particular bull you are interested in.  Some private bulls are also offering sexed semen, you just have to check.

I have not used it, except to flush a cow, but have heard it is about 90% effective in getting the sex you want. Conception will be lower on sexed semen (I have heard about 50%, up to 60%).

There are "recep" herds out there where a farm/ranch will use their cows to put in embryos, and they care for them as they would their herd. You buy the weaned calf back for an agreed price.
I personally would not "rent" a recep cow and bring her to my farm for simple disease reasons.  Who else had the cow? What was their vacc program? Etc.  When I pick up my weaned calves, I know exactly the health care they have had, I take them to a car wash and get all the dirt/mud off of them I can, I then take them to a "quarantine" lot.... I am paranoid, I know.
I do not know of anyplace that "temporarily" lets you keep the cow and then return her....

ABS sexed semen will work better when breeding heifers.  A cow reproductive tract is larger after calving, therefore, less semen in a straw and a large reproductive tract means less conception.  I have had only a little experience with the sexed semen and it was with dairy replacements.

There is a guy in Salina, KS that does ET work that has a herd of recips.  Kinda pricey but I have heard that they are good.

I recently heard of a product that you put in a regular semen straw when you thaw it and it can produce 75% chance of a heifer and it takes 20 minutes for the process.

I know a breeder who has used it. Don't know the name of the product though.
