The shortie plus was 2nd high seller I believe. I'm pretty sure an Angus sold half interest for $17k and then doubled money for full interest. Correct me if I'm wrong I might be mixing up sales in my head.

Im glad somebody likes them. i been saying this for years but everyone thought I was on crack. (except a few).  I bred a LJC Mission Statement out of a Greenridge Mary grandaughter a few years back. He was bad to the bone. The guy that bought him ended up trading him for a used pickup (pop) ???. I keep saying Im going to go buy him back and resell him. He would really fit the bill these days. Times they are a changing.

Funny what I got accused of doing when I was selling some of my purebreds and moving my program in the Plus direction. Turnpike saw a couple of my Plus females a month or so back.

Really man? Not quiet the same thing is it? A top selling bull vs a cow that was suppose to be your cornerstone that ended up going down the road couple years later. Time after time one can find sale catalogs littered with these cattle. Nobodies fault really. Just proves that pedigree dont mean its good.  Was that cow not capable of being bred to a different breed?

Im not going to argue with you again. Its just my opinion. Every cow I ever had that didnt work out for me went to town. Period.

Not trying to get in the middle of this deal, but the gentleman that bought that AP cow actually called me the other night. He was bragging on how pleased with how she is doing & how good she looks. He is definitely glad shortdawg chose to selll her.
As far as the deal on pedigrees go , I would rather take a chance on an avg. cow with a good pedigree than a better cow with an unknown pedigree. For one thing her progeny will be easier to sell sight unseen & secondly the chance of that little better cow being a fluke & then she wouldn't be able to transmit the same phenotype .

Maybe that's the entire problem of the entire Shorthorn breed?  Seems to me to be a bit backwards from my personal train of thought...

Here we go again. Good for that fella. I got no bone to pick.

Doc, thats the difference between me and you. You want to breed something you can sell. I want to breed cattle that work to improve the industry.  I dont really care about which pedigree is more popular with the show circuit.  To each is their own.  If my kids want to show cattle when they get old enough, they will show with something on the farm that we bred. I dont know why that is so not cool to do anymore. People take more pride in how much they paid for a animal or where they got it then their own animals. go figure. Obviously shortdawg is the wrong example to use. I think people get the drift tho. One thing for sure Doc. We agree to disagree. I would still buy you a drink anytime and have this chat some more. maybe you guys could change my little mind.

Trev, I have no bone to pick except I told you the truth to start with in that I was moving in a different direction with my herd and that wasn't a good enough answer. I've been breeding some plus cattle since I started and they are just flat good cattle. If shorthorn cattle are ever going to be a factor in the commercial world it will most likey be through crossbreeding with Angus, Red Angus, etc. Doc's answer is proof that just b/c she didn't produce my kind didn't mean that she couldn't produce what another breeder wants. I cull hard here and have carried quite a few to the sale barn but this particular female didn't need to go there. I'm done with this deal ! I plan to keep building my herd of Plus cattle through AI and small purchases when I can afford them. I traded for one with a fellow planeteer earlier this year and have another coming in a week or so. I think both will be great assets to my herd for sure.
