I am running short on hay this year and thought about baling up some corn fodder. My question is, how well will they eat it? My thought is to alternate hay and corn fodder bales and add a protein tub.

We have fed a lot of it through the years.  Our cows seem to prefer it.  They eat all of the leaves, then the stalks, then they eat the hay.  Will need the protein supplement.  We used a cheap 20% tub.

I don't know what it is about corn stalks, but our cows ate it 2 to 1 to the grass hay. But like you said, you will need a protein supplement to keep the cows in shape and to help them digest all the roughage. I don't like the protein tubs because most are filled with non protein nitrogen(urea),  and cows need to be on high quality forage to utilize that type of nitrogen. You can find all natural protein tubs, but they are pricey and still less effective than a commodity based protein. I like to feed cotton seed two to three times a week to supplement the hay. If you're not in a cotton growing area, DDGs are the next best thing.

we fed it last year, and will absolutly feed it this year - worked great. We did something a little different however, and the same day we were combining the corn, we raked, and baled right behind the combine. Then we wrapped the bales in line with a bale wrapper. I didn't have enough storage under a roof, and wanted quality feed. The bales ensiled very well, and turned sweet smelling, almost like corn silage. We fed in a round bale feeder - they would eat virtually every leaf, but leave the stalks which we would use for the bedding pack when i picked up the feeder and moved it. Saved me a lot of hay. The low protein concern was overcome by daily feeding of a couple buckets of pelleted corn gluten topdressed with their mineral.
