I think a lot of things factor in to when people wean. For us, it depends on the grass situation, when we put up our silage and our schedule! In a perfect world, we wean at about 6 months. We don't show much and this is when we have the best time of year for weaning. However, in drought years we have weaned at 4-5 months and last year we had a terrible wet fall and couldn't get silage up and didn't wean until 8+ months. I think many of those who are working with show calves wean around 4 months to give the calves a head start.
