Any advice on what to use would be greatly appreciated.  My son's fair steer has pretty much lost all of his neck and front shoulder hair.  what is there is thin and whispy.  The mid section and back end is wolly like it was.  WE have been combing him out and getting all of the old hair out from winter.  We try to bath him every time there is a decent day out, which has been pretty much 1 time a month this winter.  I noticed today when we bathed him that is skin seems like it is peeling/cracking.  Is there something that we can put on his skin to keep it mosturized.  thanks a bunch

I would put a bit of vinegar in a dip bucket next time you wash. Just put a couple of gulps out of the jug into a bucket and fill the rest with water and pour it over him. Then comb and blow dry. If you cant wash try using a spray bottle and spray him real good with the vinegar mixture, and then dry. It will help get rid of the flakes. Kleen sheen is a good conditioner. When he is almost dry spray him with it and continue blowing. If he is so bad, I have used people conditioner and after washing, use the hose to blow the conditioner, wait a bit, rinse then comb and dry.

How long has it been since you wormed him? It is possible that he could have mange, a dose of cydectin will not harm you even if its not mange.

Since you say that it's JUST his neck and front shoulder hair, my question is: Is he eating out of a bale feeder that he needs to stick his head through?

Sounds possibly like the begining of rain rot.  Some shapely's mtg could help.  We had a steer with a similar malody a couple years ago.  We struggled getting any hair back at all until we used the shapely's product.

First, thanks to everyone for the advice.  We had a vet out and found out that the cydectin was causing him to loose his hair.  You could see the line on his back to top of his neck where my son poured it on.  The hair that is growing back is very coarse.  The vet said it should come back as it was thick and fuzzy.  Let's hope.  We are going to try the vinegar mixture and then maybe the Shapelys.  thanks again.
